I recently wrote an article on the best candle making kits, and said that candle making is perhaps the most relaxing craft I can think of.

But now I want to take my answer back, because now that I think of it, soap making – which is very similar as a process – is at least equally easy and relaxing, and when you’re done you can enjoy a really healthful soap and a deeply relaxing bath.

Of course many would argue that the bath would be even more relaxing with some nice handmade candles, so yeah, you should probably just do both candle making and soap making.

There are two basic ways to make soap bars – cold process and melt and pour – and if we’re talking about soap making kits, and having an easy and relaxing time with your new craft, we’re talking about the melt and pour process, which is much simpler, faster and even more fun, and doesn’t involve any harsh or dangerous chemicals.

But who makes the best soap making kits, and how do you find them? Read on, and we’ll answer those questions and more, like:

Can you make your own soap?

What do the best soap making kits include?

Is soap making an easy craft?

Which soap making kit is best?

Can you make your own soap bases?

How much do the best soap making kits cost?

How do you make handcrafted soap bars?

Is homemade soap good quality?

In this article we will list a few of the very best soap making kits you can buy and talk a little about each one of them.

At the end of the article we will say a few words about soap making as a business, and if soap making can be profitable.

First, let’s go over, in a very brief and simplified way, exactly what soap making is and involves.

If you want to skip all of this, and get right to the melt and pour, here is a quick list of my top picks for best soap making kits:

What Does Soap Making Involve?

We should begin by talking a little about the soap making process, not only because it helps answer some basic questions, like:

What ingredients are used to make soap?

What raw materials are needed for soap making?

What is the soap making process step by step?

How does soap making work?

What is saponification?

Do you need to use lye to make soap?

…but also because understanding how soap is made also helps us understand why soap making kits are such a great idea.

Here we will talk about two basic processes for making soap: the cold process and the melt and pour process. There are actually lots of ways to make soap bars, but for our purposes these are the most important to consider.

Normal commercial soap making uses the cold process, with chemicals and detergents, hardeners and even other additives (like ones to make it lather more).

The key step in this process is called saponification, where a harsh alkali metal hydroxide, usually lye, reacts chemically with fatty acids to make the glycerol substance we know as soap.

And while the ingredients can be quite harsh, and even a little dangerous to work with, the finished product is safe and not irritating to the skin – though, of course, some people do find many commercially made soaps irritating.

So you can, if you want, really get into this ancient process of making soap the traditional way, and the basic soap making supplies are:

While it’s not really that complicated or difficult, it is a bit of a task, involving making lye water, thoroughly blending it and the prepared oil with a dedicated blender (don’t use it for smoothies afterwards!!!) and then molding and cutting.

And you need to make sure you are wearing protective gloves, an apron, maybe goggles and a face mask, and working on a suitable surface – lye is very caustic, and will eat through and damage most materials (including skin!).

When it is all done, if everything goes well, you have very nice and usable soap – in about 4-6 weeks.

An Easier Way to Make Soap

But the best soap making kits don’t require that you use or mix any dyes or other harsh, potentially dangerous chemicals. They have a premade soap base that you just melt and pour, letting you add colors, fragrance or other nice touches as you like, and the end result is really wonderful handcrafted soap that is usually ready for use the next day.

The soap base that is used in this melt and pour method has, in fact, already gone through the whole saponification process, and so you can skip right over all of that time consuming and possibly risky business of measuring, mixing and blending lye and fats, and concentrate more on the creativity and fun of the craft itself.

The melt and pour method is more expensive per weight of soap, and the soap is softer and doesn’t last as long, but if you get a good soap making kit – especially with a shea butter, goat milk or natural plant-based soap base, like all of those recommended here – you can rest assured that you’ll end up with really nice, gentle and healthful soap, and you have room to use your own creativity in adding fragrance, color or little flecks of natural ingredients.

What Are the Best Soap Making Kits on the Market Today?

We know what we’re looking for, then – a soap kit that:

There are a lot (really, a whole lot) of soap making kits you can buy, from very cheap to inexplicably expensive, and some of them are, to say the least, not really very good.

But all of the sets listed here, in our buyer’s guide to the best soap making craft kits on the market today, have been hand-selected for their value, the excellence of their ingredients and materials, their suitability to absolute beginners coupled with their ability to make the best soaps imaginable, and their overall fun factor.

And, except for the very first recommendation (best budget, which doesn’t include dyes or aromatic oils), they all have everything listed above – and some of them have quite a bit more!

So you simply need to figure out how much you want to spend, then choose the corresponding soap making kit below, and you are sure to end up with a really good kit, with all the necessary tools, and a wonderful introduction to this fun and relaxing craft.

Or you can just read through my brief guide, since each kit is a little bit different, and none are really that expensive, and figure out which sounds the best for you.

At the end of the article, in the Bonus section, I will talk a little about making a business out of making soap. But now let’s get into it, with our list of best soap making sets on the market today!

DIY Soap Kit| Make Your own Soap with All Soap Supplies and Accessories Included | Great Beginners Set | DIY Homemade Soap

Kit Includes:

Every kit on this list of best DIY soap making sets is complete and ready to go, and offers really excellent quality supplies and ingredients, but this CraftZee super deluxe set seems to up the game in every conceivable way, resulting in a set that really is better, and more complete, and well worth the relatively small increase in price.

For example, the silicone soap mold fits into a wooden frame, giving you the convenience and usability of silicone but with more rigidity and control.

The set includes two cutting/finishing knives, for both straight and wavy finishes, and they are both very nicely designed and well made, and quite easy to use.

The aromatic oils smell wonderful, smooth and clean and with no apparent note of chemicals or additives, and the color dyes are really vivid and usable, mix well and really look great in the finished bars.

Even the melting / pouring pitcher is a little different, and very nicely designed and made.

The soap base is really excellent, with premium shea butter, and there are four pounds of base, so you can really go crazy creating. There are lots of other nice touches, including beautiful gift labels and twine for presentation, and you even get shrink-wrap bags for keeping the soap fresh.

Overall this CraftZee soap making set has a premium look and feel that I just don’t get in even the best of the other soap kits, and everything is obviously of very good quality. An easy choice, then, for best premium soap making kit on the market today.

Goat Milk Soap Making Kit - Learn How to Make Your own soap at Home!

Kit Includes:

I absolutely love this DIY soap making set! The goat’s milk soap base is wonderfully pure and clean, and feels so good and so healthful to use. And there’s a lot of it, so I can make more bars of premium soap than with nearly any other kit.

Also included are three essential oils which are clearly of the highest quality, pure and undiluted, and smell so perfectly natural and smooth, but with real depth and solidity (I really like the blood orange!).

The dyes are nice too, with clear and beautiful colors that mix well. There are even some nice dried flowers included, which look just beautiful in the soap bars.

And while this may seem a small thing, and surely less important than things like a good, healthful soap base or the purest essential oils, the embossed soap bar molds are really nice, with beautiful details, and make just lovely bars of soap.

In every way this Grow and Make soap making kit is excellent quality. It is well designed, well made and nicely packaged, and even among all of these other great products is a real joy to use – easily my favorite soap making set, and very highly recommended!

Best Mid-Price Soap Making Kit

DIY Melt & Pour Shea Butter Soap Making Kit

Best Mid-Price Soap Making Kit

Kit Includes:

Ok, I’m cheating here a little bit, in that this “mid-priced” kit is a little too expensive for the category…

And really, the two soap making kits just above – the one I pegged for best value and the choice for best fragrance – both would make a perfect choice for best mid-priced soap making kit, and at around 40 dollars each are more in the right range.

But this Soligt melt and pour soap making kit is, for about ten dollars more, of such good quality, that it seemed like the obvious choice, and anyway had to be included in our buyer’s guide one way or another.

With really superior shea butter soap base, for luxuriant and healthful soaps, a heavy duty glass measuring cup for melting, mixing and pouring, premium silicone soap molds and a nice silicone stirring stick, and lots of nice touches like dried flowers and handmade gift stickers, this is a really standout set.

And when you throw in superbly pure and natural essential oils and intensely vivid, beautiful and nicely mixable color dyes, you end up with a soap making package that seems like it should cost a lot more than it actually does.

So not the cheapest, maybe, but the Soligt melt and pour set is the best mid-priced soap making kit I’ve ever used, and would make a really impressive gift – or, keep it for yourself and give them really impressive bars of homemade soap instead!

Kit Includes:

This ZenseMe soap making set is absolutely perfect for making soaps with really superb scent signatures.

Sure, you can get any old soap making kit, and for a little more you can add top quality essential oils, but the ZenseMe kit has all of that already – and, in fact, really great essential oils, with strong but subtle scents that have real depth and a perfectly open and natural quality. They are pure and natural, unfiltered and undiluted, and smell just fantastic!

Of course, no matter how nice its fragrance oils, no product would make it onto this lofty and exclusive list of best soap making kits unless everything else was of the best quality.

Fortunately, with the ZenseMe set it’s all really good – basic, but very good. An excellent silicone soap mold, intense and beautiful color dyes and wonderfully rich and healthful shea butter soap base are all included.

It does not contain pouring bowls or stirring sticks, cutting knives or some of the other basic bits that other kits have (which you can find in your kitchen anyway), but seems to rather focus on the quality of the things it does include.

The lovely dried flowers are a nice touch, and make your soaps even prettier, and they are a perfect complement to the essential oils. All in all, a really great and easily recommendable set, and specifically the best soap making kit I’ve ever found based on the quality of the aromatic essential oils.

I have to say that any one of the recommendations on this list of best soap making kits could be considered for this category, and they all are great values – based on the quality of the ingredients and the individual parts, the way they make soap making so easy, and the huge amount of fun they offer for not too much money.

But this DilaBee shea butter soap kit is maybe an even better value. It is, after all, firmly in the mid-range in terms of price, and yet the included soap making supplies are really premium.

The color dyes come out rich and vivid, the clearly high quality essential oils produce a scent that is strong but subtle, natural and pure, without a hint of chemicals or edge. And the soap base itself is made with wonderful shea butter, and is smooth and melts easily and evenly.

Everything you need to make your own soap – and really great soap at that – is here, and I really appreciate this kit because I know that the soaps will be so fine, so nice, that I can proudly give them to friends or family, or guiltily (but no less joyously) keep them for myself.

In terms of quality for the money, the DilaBee soap making kit is the best value I know, and in every way it is a well designed and well made product, and strongly recommended.

A very simple and easy kit to use, this B Me soap making set is really perfect for even younger kids (6 and up), but really appeals to and directly stimulates the imagination of any kid at any age.

The surprisingly heavy duty and high quality parts are made to hold up, and are designed really well for ease and clarity. The shapes of the plastic molds are fun, as are the instructions, and there are great ideas for being even more creative with soap making, and adding your own personal touch.

And the soap base is non-toxic, clean and healthy!

Any kit like this is a really fabulous and highly appreciated gift for a child, that will not just teach them a new craft but inspire them to explore their own creativity, teach them to use their hands and develop hand-eye coordination, and to develop their confidence and sense of self.

This B Me soap making kit seems designed to do all of these things especially well, and is my choice for best soap making set for kids.

Kit Includes:

This is, in some ways, a very basic kit. It doesn’t, unlike some of the more expensive choices in this buyer’s guide for best soap making sets, even include fragrances or dyes.

On the other hand, it is one of the most complete packages for basic melt and pour soap making, including literally everything you need to safely and easily make really beautifully finished soap bars.

And everything included is of very high quality, and it all (except, of course, for the soap base) looks like it would last for years.

So if you are looking for the best affordable way to make your own soaps you can spend a bit less than this, and you may even get some colorings and fragrances.

But those kits tend to include pretty poor quality components, pale and unattractive chemical dyes and unpleasant and unnatural smelling fragrances.

Personally I would much prefer to get a basic kit like this Boowan Nicole set – one that’s as high quality as possible and for very little money.

Then if I want to add really great fragrances, colors, herbs or other ingredients, I can still afford nice ones, like:

  2. Pursonic 100% Pure Essential Aromatherapy Oils Gift Set-6 Pack

When crafts are as fun and relaxing as making soap can be, it’s only natural that we think of taking it a little further – specifically, making a business out of it. And, to be sure, there are a lot of people out there making a good living just by selling homemade soaps.

But is it still a fun and relaxing craft? And more to the point, is it actually realistic to make enough money in making soaps at home? These and other questions, like:

Do handmade soaps sell well?

Is soap making a profitable craft?

Is it possible to make money selling my handmade soap?

Where is the best place to sell my soaps – online or in shops?

How much should I sell my custom soaps for?

What would make my soaps really stand out?

…are important to ask, and that last question in particular – about making your soaps stand out from the competition – is especially relevant.

Yes, it is possible to sell nice custom made artisanal soap online, or in local shops, and if it is really something you’d like to pursue you might want to check out our recent article on just how to proceed:

Make Money Crafting! A Guide to Selling Your Crafts Locally

But to really make it, to really be successful, you need to make soaps that are different, and that don’t seem just like the thousands of other choices on Etsy or Amazon Handmade – or, for that matter, in the local shops.

Just like anything else, I guess, you kind of need to stand out. There will be so many people selling soaps on Etsy or Amazon Handmade, and lots of those soaps will be pretty much the same as all the others.

How to Make Your Soaps Stand Out!

The ones that sell, though, offer something special. For example, you can try:

Can You Turn a Profit Making and Selling Soap?

Yes, of course, but unfortunately not by using any of the recommendations in this buyer’s guide to best DIY soap making kits – unless you end up charging a whole lot per bar!

In other words, the nice, easy pour method might cost you too much to make a profit, and you will have to instead resort to lye and fats!

Better to start with these melt and pour method DIY kits, get a feel for the process and the use of soap bases, oils, colors and other elements, and then – if you really want to make money – you will need to go into higher output and lower cost production.

This will mean, again, not the beginner’s kits, but instead the whole traditional hot process we mentioned earlier.

This also means, then, working with dyes, boiling or blending them with fats, using a much larger amount of raw ingredients and turning out a very high volume of soap bars.

You can still add your own special touches, but for some people the whole “special” and “personal” qualities, as well as the qualities of fun and relaxation, are out the window when the process has to ramp up.

But not everybody, and lots of people can go into a pretty full production and still have a wonderful time doing it.

And some people even stick with the much, much simpler and easier melt and pour method, and concentrate on making artisanal soaps that are so special that they can demand a higher price and are very much in demand.

If this is something you’d like to try your hand at, the best advice I can give you is to get your soap making supplies, like the melt and pour soap base, fragrances and dyes, in bulk, at the lowest prices possible, and of the highest quality – natural, healthy and pure.

These will be your best choices for selling your melt and pour bars, or just for making a lot more nice soaps for yourself, friends and family.
