One of the most important tools a graphic designer has is their computer mouse, and yet amazingly so many professional designers, graphic artists and technical artists haven’t even really considered this vital bit of gear, and continue to use the mouse that came with their computer, or have at best upgraded to a basic wireless optical mouse.

And there are some absolutely amazing computer mice out there, engineered and designed to be more comfortable and healthful, and with features and layouts which make working with graphics and graphics software so much easier and more intuitive that they can make your work substantially easier, more effective and higher quality, and even increase your output and productivity.

That seems like a lot to put on the shoulders of a humble little mouse, but that’s just how good the new generation of computer mice are. So let’s explore this ultra-important accessory in more detail, with this buyer’s guide to the best computer mice for graphic designers, illustrators and artists.

I will try to answer these questions in the artcile:

What mouse is best for graphic design?

What is the best mouse for vector graphics?

What is the best mouse for raster graphics?

What is a good mouse for Photoshop?

What is a good mouse for Adobe Illustrator?

Does anybody make good vertical mouses for designers?

What are the most ergonomic mouses for designers?

What is the best left-handed mouse for designers?

Is there a good ambidextrous mouse for graphic design?

What mouse do professional designers use?

What are the best affordable mouses for graphic design?

Shall I get a wired mouse or wireless mouse?

Why are wireless mice much better?

On a very serious note, before we proceed with the best graphic design mouses, I want to disclose as clearly as possible that I have indeed done my due diligence, checking various expert sources, each more ponderously authoritative than the last, and have definitively confirmed that it is perfectly acceptable in this particular usage to write either “mice” or “mouses.”

Why Is the Right Mouse so Important for Designers?

It is easy enough to say that the best mouse for design will change your life, but why exactly is that?

There are at least three reasons, three ultra-important considerations which make upgrading to a new mouse not just a good option to think about, but really a necessity:

Ergonomics

With shapes and designs often radically different than standard mice, ergonomically optimized mice help hold the wrist and arm at the right angle and keep the hand more comfortable when gripping, pressing function buttons or turning wheels.

Even if you don’t use a mouse for hours and hours a day this is still a huge deal, and can not only make you physically more relaxed and comfortable when working, and reduce pain, it can also prevent stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.

Functionality

Some of the best mice for designers look like proper monsters, strewn with countless buttons, wheels, panels and lights, but each and every one of these little clickers and rollers can help you.

The best mice have intelligently placed function buttons and wheels which make getting around even complex graphics software (or any software, really) easier and more intuitive, and once they are set up properly and you know them, you will be amazed at how much more natural and productive your work can be.

Precision

Many of the mice on our buyer’s guide will have resolution of 4,000 DPI (dots per inch) or higher, and all will have at least higher than normal resolution.

In addition the buttons and wheels, trackers, physical shape and construction are all designed for extreme control, which allows for much more precise movement and placement of graphical elements.

This is not just important to technical art, drafting and scientific rendering, but for any designer or artist a high resolution mouse can make work easier and less frustrating, and art cleaner, more precise and even more attractive.

And while it is often mentioned that a really high resolution and high precision mouse is the best mouse to use for vector graphics, like Adobe Illustrator, it should also be mentioned that the same mouse has basically the same advantages for raster (or bit-mapped) graphics programs like Adobe Photoshop, and will always facilitate better, easier and more precise placement, movement and overall navigation.

What Should You Look for in the Best Mouses for Graphic Design?

So, all these things being so helpful and so important, we will make a few assumptions – that you want a mouse that is good for your wrist, body and health, that you prefer a mouse that’s designed to make you more productive and to make work easier and more natural, and that you wouldn’t mind a more precise, higher resolution mouse – especially, for some of us, if none of these factors make the mouse too expensive.

But in fact even the best mice on the market for design work are surprisingly affordable, so let’s proceed, and figure out what else is important, and what you should determine for yourself and look for in your next mouse.

Design

The complex designs of many of the best mice these days can actually make work much simpler, more intuitive and natural, since you can set the keys and wheels up for the program-specific functions and actions you perform most frequently.

Still, some people will prefer a mouse with a more clean and simple design, like the Razer Pro Click or the Apple Magic Mouse, either of which for them is less distracting and/or easier to use.

Dominant Hand

It’s amazing how little love mouse designers and manufacturers have given to the southpaw, and how many left-handers try to make due with an “ergonomic” right-handed mouse that, for them, is anything but ergonomic.

Luckily you can find the best left-handed mouse for designers, with some great choices like the Evoluent VM4L, or ambidextrous mouses like the Logitech MX Anywhere or, again, the Apple Magic Mouse.

Budget

Even the most expensive, fancy and advanced mice for design work are not really that expensive, but for some of us their somewhat premium price tag might prove prohibitive.

That’s why I am so happy to have found such a genuine bargain in the Anker wireless mouse, which to me is the best budget mouse for designers on the market today. How Can You Find the Best Mouse for Design Work?

So once you’ve determined how much you want to spend, if you want the simplicity of complexity or the simplicity of simplicity, and if you are right- or left-handed (you may have already known that one), you can proceed to the exciting next step of actually choosing and buying your new mouse! Hopefully your old mouse is at least sufficient for getting you to the shopping cart…

I have tried lots and lots of different mice, and actually used so many of them with design and illustration software, and have a really good idea which mice are a great choice for designers and which mice you may want to avoid.

I also have gotten some excellent advice, feedback and specific recommendations from my friends and colleagues and from professional designers and commercial artists, and putting it all together I have assembled a list of the best computer mice on the market today for graphic designers, technical artists and illustrators.

I will include all of these recommendations below, with a few words about each mouse, but here is the basic list:

Then, in the Bonus section at the end of this article, I will talk very briefly about the best ergonomic mouse pads you can get – an excellent and inexpensive add-on that will further help to decrease injury and fatigue and make work more comfortable.

But first let’s look at some mouses, with this buyer’s guide for the best computer mice for graphic design!

At a Glance:

Possibly the most advanced mouse on the market, the Logitech MX Master 3 is the perfect choice for graphic design, technical and scientific illustration, drafting and drawing, and even fine artists. In fact, anybody who works with any type of art or graphics software can benefit enormously from the Master 3’s numerous features and customizable functions.

The high precision laser sensing allows for up to 4,000 DPI resolution, and special engineering and design make the movement and control especially precise and accurate.

Along these lines, the scroll wheel is incredibly precise, and can go from ridiculously fast to slow enough for the most painstaking work.

Full app-specific customization of all the buttons can make work more efficient, and even more intuitive, and can really clear your mind and increase concentration on the task at hand.

Flow Control functionality makes working with multiple computers simpler than ever, allowing you to easily move from one screen to another and effortlessly share files and folders.

The ergonomic design really protects your wrist and makes work less fatiguing, and the shape and overall layout are absolutely ideal for higher precision, less effort and more productivity.

Maybe the best mouse on the market today, the Logitech MX Master 3 is a bit of a masterpiece of design and technology, and is remarkably inexpensive for what you get – an easy choice for the best mouse overall for graphic designers.

At a Glance – Logitech MX Master 3:

At a Glance – Apple Magic Mouse 2:

I am going to include two mice as the best choice for graphic artists using Apple computers – the same Logitech MX Master 3 mentioned above (here in the Apple-specific version) and the sleek and beautiful Apple Magic Mouse 2, which is in its own way a masterpiece of design and functionality.

We have gone over the reasons why the Logitech MX Master 3 is the best mouse overall for graphic artists and designers – app-specific customization, perfect shape for ergonomics and control, incredibly high precision and resolution and a lot more – but certain artists will prefer the much simpler approach of the Magic Mouse.

The Magic Mouse has no buttons at all, but instead ingeniously combines mouse and touchpad in one device, allowing you to tap and gesture on the surface of the mouse for more advanced functions.

While not as high of resolution as the MX Master, the laser sensors give the Magic Mouse above average resolution, and the precision and control are, in practice, really great.

While not as ergonomically optimized as the Logitech, and really best if used with a good ergonomic mouse pad (see my Bonus section below), the Apple mouse is ideally shaped for effortless work, flow and control, and in its way is a very non-fatiguing device to use. And the Magic Mouse is, of course, fully and effortlessly compatible with all iPads back to iPadOS 13.4 and Macs back to OS X 10.11.

In fact both the Apple and Logitech are fully and flawlessly compatible with Apple, and both are designed to be ideal for the specific tasks of  creative artists of any kind, so you can take your pick – complex and customizable or sleek and, well, a bit magical.

Either one can easily be considered the best mouse for graphic designers on the Apple platform.

At a Glance:

We should again emphasize that the complexity of a mouse like the superb Logitech MX Master 3 can, and does, in fact lead to new levels of simplicity and intuitive ease.

Still, some graphics designers prefer a simple and minimal design, with the feeling that less buttons, lights and wheels means an even surer and more direct path to concentration and undistracted creative flow.

And if you’re an Apple user you can stop right here and go up the page a short way, because the Magic Mouse is the best exemplar of minimalist design and advanced technology.

You can even use the Magic Mouse via Bluetooth on Windows, though full functionality requires downloading drivers and using third-party control and customization software.

A better choice for Windows users is the brilliant Razer Pro Click, which is surprisingly ergonomic considering its slim and simple profile, and appears and operates as a simple two/three button mouse.

But for all its apparent simplicity, the Pro Click has stupendous resolution – up to 16,000 DPI – and some of the very best precision and control of any mouse available.

And, again despite its functional simplicity, the Pro Click actually has 8 fully customizable control buttons – so you can have simple, undistracted old-school mouse use and sneak in a keyboard or tool shortcut now and then – the best of both worlds.

A sleek, comfortable mouse that is incredibly easy to use but at the same time has advanced customizability and incredibly high precision and control, the Razer Pro Click is one of the finest mouses for any artist, and a clear choice for the best simple mouse for graphic designers on the market today.

I will say, though, that despite its excellent ergonomic design, the Razer Pro Click is not on quite the level of some other ergonomic or vertical mouses on our list of best graphic design mice, and you may really want to consider also getting a good ergonomic mouse pad, as detailed in the Bonus section below.

At a Glance:

For around a quarter of the price of the Logitech MX Master 3 or Razer Pro Click, our next recommendation on this list of best graphic design mice – the Anker 2.4G vertical mouse – is quite a remarkable unit on many levels.

No, you aren’t going to get a mouse at this price level that has actual resolution in the 4,000-16,000 DPI range, but the Anker has above-average resolution and absolutely remarkable control and precision when working. It also has five customizable buttons and one of the very best ergonomic shapes of any mouse out there – suitable not just to prevent injury, pain and discomfort, but also for people who have, unfortunately, already suffered a repetitive stress injury and need relief when working.

A very well made mouse with a really premium look and feel, that is nicely customizable and allows for extremely high levels of control and precision, and a shape that just lends itself to productivity and creative flow while also protecting your body and health, the Anker 2.4G vertical ergonomic mouse is pretty remarkable for the money, and is an easy choice as best budget mouse for graphic designers.

At a Glance:

It is absolutely amazing that there are so very few good mouses designed specifically for left-handed users, and even fewer that are really ideal for graphic design.

That’s why we are quite fortunate to have a company like Evoluent, and their excellent left-hand USB wired vertical ergonomic mouse, the VM4L VerticalMouse.

In fact, Evoluent also makes great right hand mouses as well, and is especially known as a leading innovator in truly healthful ergonomic designs which are also ideal for workflow, concentration and – as a natural extension – creativity.

The VM4L has one of their best physical designs, really comfortable and with a wonderfully “just right” kind of feeling, and the shape seems to lend itself to control and exact movement and placement.

Six programmable buttons and a maximum 2,600 DPI resolution, among many other features and functionalities, also make this Evoluent mouse a great choice for graphic design, technical drawing or drafting, or really any type of art or graphics work.

Designed for health and ultimate comfort, productivity and focus, built to the highest standards, precise and nicely controllable, the Evoluent VM4L VerticalMouse is not just the best left-handed mouse for graphic designers, it is one of the best computer mice on the market today, and highly recommended!

At a Glance:

Another ideal choice for left-handed people, and the perfect computer mouse for people who can easily switch between hands, the Logitech MX Anywhere 3 is a really great mouse for anybody, and one of the best choices on the market today for graphic designers.

This mouse is perhaps primarily, or at least partially, designed to be portable, with great laser tracking that will work on any surface, a small but substantial profile and very tough and durable construction.

At the same time the MX Anywhere 3 is a fantastic mouse for graphic design – whether you’re in the studio or on the road – with high resolution and Logitech’s silent auto-switching MagSpeed scroll wheel, which allows high speed scrolling and movement and super-precise placement.

Not as ergonomic as many of the products on this buyer’s guide for the best computer mice for graphic designers, the Anywhere 3 could definitely benefit from a good ergonomic mouse pad (see my Bonus section below), but is actually quite well shaped for control, and supremely comfortable, and is designed to be equally comfortable and effective with either the left or the right hand.

A super-tough and versatile mouse for artists, with high resolution, great control and high precision, the Logitech MX Anywhere 3 is easily the best ambidextrous mouse for graphic design on the market today, and one of the best computer mice period for art or anything else!

Best Vertical Mouse for Designers

Vertical
Logitech MX Vertical Wireless Mouse

Best Vertical Mouse

Advanced Ergonomic Design Reduces Muscle Strain, Control and Move Content Between 3 Windows and Apple Computers (Bluetooth or USB), Rechargeable

At a Glance:

Several of the units on this list of best graphic design mice are especially ergonomically designed for health and comfort, and do a great job of relieving stress and preventing stress injuries.

But a vertical mouse can be especially effective in this way, and it can provide great relief for people who have already sustained such an injury and feel discomfort or pain using normal computer mice.

And since this is a buyer’s guide specifically for graphic designers and other artists, the Logitech MX mouse is an especially apt choice, with the same great features and design you expect from any of their MX line of computer mice.

This includes really ideal shape and button placement, superb comfort, exceptionally high levels of control and ease when working, high resolution and precision in movement and placement, and Flow Control for effortless and efficient work on multiple computers.

It is clear that a lot of real thought, research and engineering went into the design of the Logitech MX mouse, and I would guess that Logitech’s designers also got a great deal of feedback from working commercial and fine artists, designers, illustrators, animators, technical drafting artists and others.

However, it came about, though, the end product is amazing, and easily the best vertical mouse for graphic design.

Bonus: Best Ergonomic Mouse Pads

I strongly feel that graphic designers, commercial artists, working digital artists, art students or anybody who uses their computer to make art should be especially aware of and cautious about repetitive stress injuries and conditions, including (among others) carpal tunnel syndrome.

The pain and discomfort, and the way these conditions can keep us from really flowing in creativity, from doing exactly what we want and need to do, from feeling confident and comfortable and realizing the highest levels of control and technique, even how they can make us not even want to create at all – these are all pretty horrible things that I wouldn’t wish on anybody.

And I really mean anybody, because carpal tunnel and other stress injuries can be just as horrible for anybody out there – artist, accountant or internet surfer – and they are in every case painful and debilitating.

That’s why so many computer mice on our list of best mice for graphic design are especially well designed for ergonomics, with the aim of keeping even very busy artists and designers (or, again, anybody else), healthy and free from injury and suffering.

Whether you are a very part time computer artist, or you put in hours and hours each and every day, this is of extreme importance.

Still, three of the mice that made it on our list and do not have the very highest levels of ergonomics – the Magic Mouse, the Razer Pro Click and the Logitech MX Anywhere 3 – and in their reviews I have strongly recommended that you also get a good ergonomic mouse pad, which can compensate for the designs of these otherwise excellent mice.

All three of them are, anyway, beautifully shaped for comfort and ease, and much healthier than lots of other computer mice out there, but yeah, they could each use a little (wrist) support.

But really any of the mouses in this buyer’s guide for best graphic design mouse would really benefit from, and work great with, a high quality and well designed ergonomic mouse pad.

Not only does it make them even more healthful, and your body and work even more safe and protected, but it makes everything more comfortable, easier, more focused and less fatiguing.

So in closing I want to recommend a very few of the best and most healthful ergonomic mouse pads on the market today, in the hope that such a small and inexpensive accessory will help you stay healthier and more productive, and make your work – whatever work you do – more fun and enjoyable.
