So, let’s get right into it, with this buyer’s guide for the best macrame cord.

First we’ll talk a little about the different kinds of macrame cord, next what makes a good cord and a bad cord, and then list out a few specific recommendations, cord I’ve tried and loved, as well as cord my friends and some of our readers have recommended.

Along the way we’ll try to answer some basic questions, like:

Who makes the best macrame cord?

What is macrame cord called?

Is cotton rope the best for macrame?

Is cotton cord better than synthetic for macrame?

Can you use yarn for macrame?

Is the best macrame cord waxed or unwaxed?

What size macrame cord is best?

And finally, in the bonus section, we’ll even mention a few other nice and great quality macrame supplies.

What Different Types of Macrame Ropes or Cords Are There?

There are a few basic types of macrame cord you can use, so let’s talk about each, and what makes each variety best for macrame.

Macrame Rope

This is the normal, thick, usually cotton cord you normally associate with macrame. The most common and widely used size, and the most versatile, is 3 millimeters. Macrame rope is usually 3 ply, meaning that three different thickish cotton strings are wound together to make the cord. This type of cord is strong, knots well, stays wound when you’re working, and has a beautifully substantial look and feel

Macrame String

Really just string, although adding the word “macrame” to the beginning might help it sell for more on Amazon. That said, you would normally want this string to be pretty thick – 3 mm like the standard macrame rope above. Often only used for certain tasks like fringe, where it will hang nice and smooth, or for projects where strength isn’t important, macrame string can be pretty easy to work with, but even the thicker stuff doesn’t always knot with the same nicely prominent profile that 3 ply will offer. 1 ply string can easily unravel when you’re working, and also in finished pieces, so be sure to really close the ends of the strands.

Waxed Cord

A thinner and denser macrame cord, often a single strand, waxed cord is often used for macrame jewelry or small personal items like key fobs. The waxing generally makes this cord darker, and allows for some pretty tight and dense knotting.

High quality macrame cord can be very strong, and the wax keeps it from unraveling, but still, like with 1 ply string, it’s a good idea to really secure the ends of these strands.

Yarn

The same yarn you would use for knitting, so it is soft and feels wonderful, and is actually a pretty good thickness for macrame knotting. Yarn is especially good for pieces you want to have a really soft finish and feel, but not so good for strength, so don’t use it for things like plant hangers or larger wall pieces, and only for hammocks if you wanted to lie on the floor anyway – because that’s where you’ll end up!

Yarn does knot well, but even thicker yarns tend to make pretty smooth and indistinct knots, which definitely changes the look and feel of macrame, and is not for everybody.

Bottom line: I would, and do, use standard 3 ply macrame cord, or macrame rope, for almost all of my work, but might use any of the other varieties for special projects and purposes. I will recommend the best macrame cord below in all four of these categories.

Natural Macrame Cord versus Synthetic Macrame Cord – Which is Better?

Most macrame projects, sets and starter kits include natural cotton cord, which is usually undyed and unbleached. This gives a great combination of strength, workability and a nice, soft feeling.

You can also get natural macrame cord in hemp, linen or other materials, and some are very fine quality (some are also very expensive!), but cotton is overwhelmingly the most popular, and by most knotters’ reckoning, the very best.

In general, all of the natural fibers are easier to work and easier to dye than synthetic cord, and natural cord is usually quite strong and feels nice. And if you ever plan on selling your macrame, customers almost always prefer natural materials.

Synthetic macrame cord, however, can be quite strong too, and is a better choice for pieces you are going to use outside – especially if exposed to weather and the elements. It is sometimes not quite as easy to work with, and definitely won’t have quite the nice, luxurious feel of natural fiber, but is good for some projects.

Bottom line: I prefer natural fiber, and especially natural cotton, which combines strength, a nice feel, great workability and economy. Synthetic fiber is good for pieces which may be exposed to the elements, especially water, but most crafters, and most customers, prefer natural cord for macrame.

So, Which High Quality Macrame Cord Should You Get?

Ok, enough with all of that. Let’s get to the recommendations! I will list my choices for best macrame cord in the four categories I listed above, with at least one choice for each, and say a very few words about each pick.

At the end of the article, in the Bonus section, I will talk a bit about some of the best supplies for macrame besides cord – there’s not much more; dowels and beads and hoops and whatnot, but I’ve definitely got some favorites!

But for now, cord, cord and more cord!

Whatever your macrame project – a colorful wall hanging, throw or rug, even a bright new macrame dress – a you’ll find a perfect color with this great natural cotton macrame cord.

My Favorite Natural Macrame Cord That’s Not Cotton

Hemp

I do love natural fiber, and if it’s not cotton it’s almost always Hemptique, which makes strong, super durable hemp craft cord that is amazingly easy to work with.

It is also pretty amazingly well finished – not always a given with even the best hemp cord – with a smooth and beautiful surface that still looks natural and distinctive.

Very high quality, reasonably priced and warmly recommended!

Hemptique also makes some of the best hemp string and cord for crafting – wonderfully strong, soft and workable, and offered in a huge variety of styles, colors and sizes. But even the thickest Hemptique cord that I’ve found is not quite as thick as normal macrame cord, and maybe only for specific macrame projects or purposes. Great stuff, though, and I would definitely recommend you check them out on Amazon, at Hemptique Store

The Best Polyester Macrame Cord

Yes, as I just said, I do love natural materials, but of course sometimes polyester is a better choice, or even the only choice. This is especially true for macrame pieces which may be used or displayed outdoors, or otherwise exposed to the elements.

When I use synthetic cord for macrame, my favorite is Bonnie Craft Cord. Ok, technically this is actually polyolefin rather than polyester, and I’m not entirely sure what the difference is…

But I do know this is beautifully finished, strong string that comes in a bunch of bright, vivid and fun colors, knots beautifully and is very strong and durable.

For certain macrame pieces you really need one ply macrame cord, and the best I’ve worked with in Crafteza, a thick (3 mm) premium string made in India.

It has a good, finely finished surface. pure and natural cotton that won’t unravel – when I’m working or when I’m finished, and is available in several rich and warm colors. And it is super easy to work with.

Crafteza also makes a crazy thick 6 millimeter single strand macrame cord, which I’ve never tried, but it’s got to be quite an experience!

Mandala Crafts makes so much fun stuff for crafting – not just macrame cords – and it all seems to be very good quality, and a fairly good value to boot.

I especially like, and use quite a bit, their waxed macrame cord, which is made from pure cotton and uses natural wax. This is 12 ply cord, which will not unravel when you’re working or over time. It’s quite easy to knot, and the beautiful finish is as durable as any cord I’ve used.

With a wide variety of very nice colors, and coming in an extra long spool at a fair price, this is an excellent product, and the best waxed cord for macrame I’ve ever used.

The Best Yarn for Macrame

I don’t use yarn hardly at all for macrame – only in very special cases – and I can’t say I recommend it. It really does work very differently, with small, compressed knots and often a more slick and harder to hold surface compared to the best macrame cord.

But when I do, my absolute favorite is Lion Brand. This soft, strong and beautifully finished acrylic yarn is chunky and knots well, and comes in lots of fun colors. Durable and quite workable, Lion Brand also seems to me to be a very good value considering the overall very high quality.

I use it for lots of stuff, and it’s about the only yarn I would use for macrame. Whatever you use if for, though, Lion Brand Hometown yarn is highly recommended!

Bonus: My Favorite Macrame Supplies

Now that we’ve covered such a wide selection of great macrame cords and strings, let’s focus on the other stuff. This is not by any means an exhaustive list, but I still wanted to take some time to mention some of my favorite macrame beads, rings, hoops and dowels.
