Why an Article on the Best Stained Glass Classes?

In my fairly extensive research and digging around I have realized that there is very little available on the web right now about finding class listings and locations for the various kinds of crafting. In fact, if you want to find the best classes for, in this case, learning how to make stained glass, it might be quite a bit more difficult than you imagine.

So I thought it would be super helpful to put together a list of the best available stained glass classes – including group and private lessons – for 16 cities and metro areas around the United States, and to include some of the best online classes and books as well. But first…

What Is Stained Glass?

Recommended: Best Stained Glass Kit: A Crafter’s Guide

We may think of cathedrals, or of Tiffany lamps, when we hear “stained glass,” and assume it is far too difficult and high level to learn, but in fact with the right instruction making beautiful stained glass creations – window hangings and light catchers, plates and planters, ornaments and so much more – is easier than you might suspect.

Still, it is a fairly detailed and skilled creative hobby, and each of the basic steps does require precision and knowledge. The basic and more advanced steps include:

…and there can be many other steps or variations along the way.

And with stained glass, more than with some other arts and crafts projects, having the right techniques and understanding, as well as a few inside tips, can really raise your pieces to a whole new level of finish, professionalism and beauty. And even the most basic beginner class can really provide you with what you need to do just that.

But whether you need the basics, or want to explore the most advanced techniques and professional, next-level effects and finishes, a great stained glass class – with a good, experienced and supportive teacher and well-designed and valuable content – can make all the difference!

What is the Best Way to Learn Stained Glass?

I wanted to make sure that prospective students could quickly and easily find the right instruction and instructors for learning how to cut glass, color and fuse, and to make beautiful stained glass pieces, whether you want an online class, a local class or private instructor, or even the best books on learning the art and craft of stained glass, so I put together this guide to answer some basic questions:

For local classes, I will concentrate on 16 cities and their metropolitan areas, with two subsections for each city, and so you will find below the best stained glass class offerings and the best private stained glass teachers for the following cities:

Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis / Saint Paul, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle

Following the listings of best local stained glass classes I will mention a few of the very best online stained glass courses you can take, and then recommend a few of my favorite books for teaching yourself stained glass.

What Are the Best Online Classes for Learning Stained Glass in 2022?

Not everybody is able to go to physical classes, because of location, schedule, social distancing / enforced isolation, or other reasons. Luckily there are a lot of other good options, and online learning is one of the best – especially if you can find a good instructor, good course content and well produced classes. You will, however, need to have your own basic making and safety equipment, which can be a relatively large expense, and with stained glass you have to be extremely careful about safety considerations and focus when viewing online courses or videos.

Here I’ll offer some of my favorite online learning platforms, and especially ones that are particularly good for learning various creative hobbies – which do require a certain approach, a particular type of teacher and teaching style and very clear visuals and instructions to be really successful.

So when people ask me specifically:

…based on my experience and feedback from lots of other makers in the community I have the following recommendations:

Skillshare

You may already be familiar with Skillshare, since they are becoming one of the most popular, best known and most highly rated learning platforms online – and quite well known for arts and crafts classes.

Skillshare only offers a single online class right now on stained glass, but it is highly rated and popular, so it might be worth checking out, and they are very likely to offer new classes soon..

Domestika

Online Stained Glass Courses

Learn by doing from expert professionals on Domestika!

Explore the Courses Now

Not as big or as well known as the giants, like Skillshare or Udemy, Domestika still has a comparable level of excellence overall, with really fantastic teachers who are very clear and easy to understand and maintain a perfect flow and pace.

The courses are beautifully produced and often quite beautiful visually as well, and there is a great feeling of creative community and common experience.

They currently offer only two classes (twice as many as Skillshare, though!), and while they are nomically aimed at total beginners, it is probably best to think of them as beginning/intermediate classes – though very good ones!

Udemy

Online Stained Glass Courses

Learn anything, on your schedule on Udemy!

Explore the Courses Now

Another giant of online learning, Udemy doesn’t have an enormous selection of stained glass classes, but they are all very good quality – well shot and well presented, and taught by people who really know their stuff.

Like Domestika and Skillshare, Udemy’s stained glass classes are quite limited – only one proper offering, but a very good one, well made and well taught.

The Glass Bar

In addition to offering some of the very best stained glass lessons in the Boston area, The Glass Bar also offers maybe the best online courses on stained glass available today, as well as many other art glass techniques. Virtual Stained Glass Classes | The Glass Bar

Gomm Stained Glass

Another local legend, this one offering classes, products and services in the St Louis area for almost 40 years, Gomm also offers a small selection of first-rate online classes – clear and friendly, very complete and helpful, and a perfect choice for the beginner. Gomm Stained Glass Online Classes

YouTube

It must be said that YouTube has some pretty amazing free content, and the stained glass tutorials and classes are, or at least can be, pretty awesome. Another great thing about YouTube is the search engine, which when you’re searching for something as basic and popular as, say, “learning stained glass” comes up with brilliant results right at the top of the page.

But if that all isn’t easy enough for you, just click on the link and you’ll see what I mean!

What Are the Best Books for Learning Stained Glass in 2022?

And I’ll close out this comprehensive online guide to the best resources for learning stained glass with a short list of some of my favorite books on the subject.

I had originally planned to list beginners and advanced books on stained glass separately, but as I reviewed my own personal picks I realized that I greatly prefer books that offer both – ones that start at a basic, total beginner level, assuming no experience or knowledge, but also include advanced techniques, and often a lot of other resources, ideas and inspirations for people of all levels.

So while the first few books are really geared more at newbies, you will find that, even if you have no prior experience, any of these books will be a great choice and a wonderful resource.

What Are the Best Local Classes for Learning Stained Glass in 2022?

Anybody can use one of the countless online specialty search services like groupon or yelp for finding places that offer a good stained glass class – whether general introductory courses, more advanced classes on making stained glass panels or mosaics or the proper way to cut glass, or specialized workshops on, for example, mastering the Tiffany method of copper foil stained glass.

And you can also find private sessions, stained glass clubs to join, makerspaces and more. In fact such services do usually offer good, fairly complete and up to date listings of class offerings in the area, so you might want to check out some of the leading ones, like:

Usually these search services are really easy to use, by simply typing in what you’re looking for – “stained glass workshops” or “glass cutting classes” – and the area, city or state – “Monowi, Nebraska” or “New York, New York”- and then it’s just enter, wait and wade through the somewhat random listings.

Or, better yet, you can instead simply scroll down and find your area in the list below and try one of these recommendations. You can contact them to get any questions answered, like their regular business hours, when you can begin classes, how much they cost, is experience required, what finished pieces you can make, or any other information about their introductory course offerings, special hands-on workshops, future projects and more.
