Why an Article on the Best Pottery and Ceramics Classes?

In my fairly extensive research and digging around I have realized that there is very little available on the web right now about finding classes and instruction, workshops or open studio space for the various kinds of crafting.

In fact, if you want to find the best in person or online classes for, in this case, learning how to create pottery, it might be quite a bit more difficult than you imagine.

Where can I find pottery classes near me?

How can I find local art classes for all ages?

Are there open studio hours near me?

Can I find a hand building or wheel throwing class for my skill level?

How do I know what class selection my local ceramics studio offers?

So I thought it would be super helpful to put together a list of the best available pottery classes – including group and private lessons and covering all skill levels – for 16 cities and metro areas around the United States, and to include some of the best online classes and books as well. But first…

What Is Pottery and Ceramics?

Recommended: Choosing the Best Sculpting Clay and Tools

Well, I suspect that you might already have some idea what this fun creative hobby is, or you might not even be reading this! Still, let’s take just a moment to talk about the craft itself, which helps us understand what we might want to look for if we want to take a class or workshop.

Pottery, also known as ceramics, is the craft or artisanal trade of creating vessels – like vases, cups, plates and bowls and a lot more – figurines or other objects from clay. This usually involves several steps, including:

There are tons of other possible steps, methods and techniques, variations and more, and every single one of these basic steps requires – or at least can really benefit from – not just rudimentary understanding, but also special techniques, knowledge and experience, as well as lots of little tips and tricks in both wheel throwing or making ceramics by hand.

Because of this a ceramics class can be especially valuable to get expert guidance and teaching, in the form of a class or guided workshop, private teacher, online course, or even a good book about learning, improving or perfecting the art of making pottery.

Please note that throughout this guide to best learning resources I will use the words “pottery” and “ceramics” interchangeably.

What is the Best Way to Learn Pottery and Ceramics?

I wanted to make sure that you could quickly and easily find the right instruction and instructors for learning how to make pottery, whether you want an online class, a local class or private teacher, or even the best books on learning and making pottery, so I put together this guide to answer some basic questions:

For local classes, I will concentrate on 16 cities and their metropolitan areas, with two subsections for each city, and so you will find below the best pottery classes and the best private pottery teachers for the following cities:

Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis / Saint Paul, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle

Following the listings of best local ceramics classes and ceramics studio options I will mention a few of the very best online pottery courses you can take, and then recommend a few of my favorite books for teaching yourself pottery.

What Are the Best Online Classes for Learning Pottery and Ceramics in 2022?

Not everybody is able to go to physical classes, because of location, schedule, social distancing / enforced isolation, or other reasons. Luckily there are a lot of other good options, and online learning is one of the best – especially if you can find a good teacher, good course content and well produced classes. You will, for throwing classes at least, need the right equipment – a wheel and probably some other basic tools, and you may need to take your pieces to a local workshop for firing – unless, of course, you’ve got a kiln hidden away in the basement!

So when people ask me specifically:

…based on my experience and feedback from lots of other makers in the community I have the following recommendations:

Skillshare

You may already be familiar with Skillshare, since they are becoming one of the most popular, best known and most highly rated learning platforms online – and quite well known for arts and crafts classes.

You may not know, though, that Skillshare has some of the best classes for making pottery, including both the basics and more advanced tips and techniques.

Domestika

Online Ceramics Courses

Learn by doing from expert professionals on Domestika!

Explore the Courses Now

Not as big or as well known as the giants, like Skillshare or Udemy, Domestica still has a comparable level of excellence overall, with really fantastic teachers who are very clear and easy to understand and maintain a perfect flow and pace.

The courses are beautifully produced and often quite beautiful visually as well, and there is a great feeling of creative community and common experience.

Udemy

Online Pottery Courses

Learn anything, on your schedule on Udemy!

Explore the Courses Now

Another giant of online learning, Udemy doesn’t have an enormous selection of pottery or ceramics classes, but they are all very good quality – well shot and well presented, and taught by people who really know their stuff.

The Ceramics School

Definitely the little guy when it comes to online learning, The Ceramics School has a big selection of classes for hand-building and throwing pottery, as well as a thriving online community of potters.

You will also find events listings and other resources, all easily accessible from their website – The Ceramics School.

YouTube

It must be said that YouTube has some pretty amazing free content, and the stained glass tutorials and classes are, or at least can be, pretty awesome.

Another great thing about YouTube is the search engine, which when you’re searching for something as basic and popular as, say, “learning pottery” comes up with brilliant results right at the top of the page.

But if that all isn’t easy enough for you, just click on this link and you’ll see what I mean!

YouTube “Learning Pottery”

And please check out one of my favorite makers on YouTube, with a lot of wonderful videos on the pottery process:

Kara Leigh Ford

What Are the Best Books for Learning Pottery and Ceramics in 2022?

And I’ll close out this comprehensive online guide to the best resources for learning pottery and ceramics with a short list of some of my favorite books on the subject.

I had originally planned to list beginners and advanced books on stained glass separately, but as I reviewed my own personal picks I realized that I greatly prefer books that offer both – ones that start at a basic, total beginner level, assuming no experience or knowledge, but also include advanced techniques and projects, and often a lot of other resources, ideas and inspirations for people of all levels.

So while the first couple of books are really geared more at newbies, you will find that, even if you have no prior experience, any of these books will be a great choice and a wonderful resource.

What Are the Best Local Classes for Learning Pottery and Ceramics in 2022?

Anybody can use one of the countless online specialty search services for finding local classes and private sessions to join – like groupon or yelp – and in fact they do usually offer good, fairly complete and up to date listings of class offerings in the area – and you might even find a private lesson or teacher, or open studio time. So you might want to check out some of the leading ones, like:

Usually these search services are really easy to use, by simply typing in what you’re looking for – “pottery classes” or “open studio” – and the area, city or state – “Monowi, Nebraska” or “New York, New York”- and then it’s just enter, wait and wade through the somewhat random listings.

Or, better yet, you can instead simply scroll down and find your area in the list below and try one of these recommendations. You can contact them about when you can begin classes, or for information about special workshops, open studio space times, wheel throwing or hand building workshops, even in some cases private classes in your own home – and more.
