Why an Article on the Best Way to Learn Crochet?
In my fairly extensive research and digging around I have realized that there is very little available on the web right now about finding classes and instruction for the various kinds of crafting.
In fact, if you want to find the best classes for, in this case, learning how to crochet, it might be quite a bit more difficult than you imagine.
So I thought it would be super helpful to put together a list of the best available classes for crocheting – including group and private lessons – for 16 cities and metro areas around the United States, and to include some of the best online classes and books as well. But first…
What Is Crochet?
The word crochet originally comes from the French, and simply means “small hook.” This is a good way of understanding what crocheting actually is, and how it is different from knitting. You see, while with knitting you use two long needles to loop and interlace a single length of yarn, thread or other materials, crocheting uses a single small hook, which pulls loops and directly connects them.
And while this sounds simple enough, there is a real art to the basic motions and even the most simple loops and stitches in crochet – like the single crochet, double crochet and half double crochet stitches, post stitches and the granny square – and a lot of other details and considerations to learn, like advanced stitches, creating patterns, color usage, laces and cables, Tunisian crochet and amigurumi.
Some people say that crocheting is an easier craft than knitting, while others find knitting easier. Either way, though, it’s a really good idea to get your basics down with a good crochet class, either a live group or private crochet lesson or an online session – and there are countless classes all over the country and all over the web to choose from.
What is the Best Way to Learn to Crochet?
I wanted to make sure that you could quickly and easily find the right instruction and instructors for learning how to crochet, whether you want an online class, a local class or private teacher, or even the best books on learning crochet, so I put together this guide to answer some basic questions:

What Are the Best Online Classes for Learning Crocheting in 2022?
Not everybody is able to go to physical classes, because of location, schedule, social distancing / enforced isolation, or other reasons. Luckily there are a lot of other good options, and online learning is one of the best – especially if you can find a good teacher, good course content and well produced classes. And with crochet in particular, online classes can work especially well.
So when people ask me specifically:

You may already be familiar with Skillshare, since they are becoming one of the most popular, best known and most highly rated learning platforms online – and quite well known for arts and crafts classes.
For crocheting alone they have over 150 online lessons, which have proved to be very highly rated and popular.
Domestika
Learn by doing from expert professionals on Domestika!
Udemy
Another giant of online learning, Udemy doesn’t have nearly as many crocheting classes as Skillshare (above), but what they have are very good quality in every respect, and well worth checking out.
Club Crochet
I have to say that I’m still trying to figure out the catch here, but Club Crochet really does seem to offer all of their excellent online crochet courses for free! Yes, they also sell some nice and inexpensive crochet kits on the site, but that does absolutely nothing to detract from what an amazing find, and an amazing resource, this is.

Annie’s Craft Store
Annie’s has something like fifty plus crocheting lessons online, and while they seem a tad bit pricey to me, there is absolutely no denying their quality, or the love and enthusiasm of the teachers.

If you haven’t heard of Creativebug yet, you soon will. Just ten years old now, and with over a thousand classes available, the site seems poised to become the industry leader in online crafting classes. They only cover a few categories of crafting at this point, but crochet is one of them, and they have close to a hundred courses available.

I had originally planned to list beginners and advanced books on crochet separately, but as I reviewed my own personal picks I realized that I greatly prefer books that offer both – ones that start at a basic, total beginner level, assuming no experience or knowledge, but also include advanced techniques, and often a lot of other resources, ideas and inspirations for people of all levels.
So while the first few books are really geared more at newbies, you will find that, even if you have no prior experience, any of these books will be a great choice and a wonderful resource.
