Why an Article on the Best Candle Making Classes?
In my fairly extensive research and digging around I have realized that there is very little available on the web right now about finding classes and instruction for the various kinds of crafting.
In fact, if you want to find the best classes for, in this case, learning how to make candles, it might be quite a bit more difficult than you imagine.
So I thought it would be super helpful to put together a list of the best available candle making classes – including group and private lessons – for 16 cities and metro areas around the United States, and to include some of the best online classes and books as well. But first…
What Is Candle Making?

Candle making may seem like a very simple and basic creative hobby, and, well, it kind of is. In fact, the most basic process can be summed up in three steps:
- Place wick
- Melt wax
- Pour wax
There is a bit more to it, though, like selecting either soy wax or beeswax, coloring wax, mixing and adding scented oils, how to use special molds or freehand shapes, and it is a great new skill to learn. And there are a lot of little tips jealously guarded by more experienced candle makers.
Ok, maybe not, and unlike our articles on, say, blacksmithing, glass blowing or welding classes, I can’t really claim that it’s crucial to get a good class for making candles. So why write this long listicle on the best classes for learning candle making?
Well, for one thing, it is an enormously popular hobby, and both classes and candle bars have really exploded all over the country and all around the world. And, for another thing, it is a really, really cool craft, and a really, really fun way to spend an afternoon or evening, and I simply cannot recommend a good candle making class or pouring bar highly enough!
What is the Best Way to Learn to Make Candles?
I wanted to make sure that you could quickly and easily find the right instruction and instructors for learning how to make candles, whether you want an online class, a local class, pouring bar or private teacher, or even the best books on learning candle making, so I put together this guide to answer some basic questions:

What Are the Best Online Classes for Learning Candle Making in 2022?
Not everybody is able to go to physical classes, because of location, schedule, social distancing / enforced isolation, or other reasons. Luckily there are a lot of other good options, and online learning is one of the best – especially if you can find a good teacher, good course content and well produced classes.

Find what fascinates you as you explore these candle-making classes.
You may already be familiar with Skillshare, since they are becoming one of the most popular, best known and most highly rated learning platforms online – and quite well known for arts and crafts classes.
If you search for candle making, though, you will find only a few listings at the top, followed by lots of other, seemingly unrelated classes, so be sure you’re not signing up for a “mixed media poinsettia vignette” class, whatever that is…
Udemy
Another giant of online learning, Udemy has a lot of candle making classes, although the basic search does also come up with classes on candle magic, aromatherapy, soap making and even basic herbalism and healing!
Still, the actual candle making classes are highly rated by registered students, and well worth checking out.
YouTube
It must be said that YouTube has some pretty amazing free content, and for candle making in particular it may be the best option – free, easy to access and featuring classes put together by people who clearly know and love the craft. There are also a lot of videos about starting your own candle making business.
Another great thing about YouTube is the search engine, which when you’re searching for something as basic and popular as, say, “Learning Candle Making” comes up with brilliant results right at the top of the page.

I had originally planned to list beginners and advanced books on sewing separately, but as I reviewed my own personal picks I realized that I greatly prefer books that offer both – ones that start at a basic, total beginner level, assuming no experience or knowledge, but also include advanced techniques, and often a lot of other resources, ideas and inspirations for people of all levels.
So while the first few books are really geared more at newbies, you will find that, even if you have no prior experience, any of these books will be a great choice and a wonderful resource.

Anybody can use one of the countless specialty search services for finding places that offer online candle making classes – whether a hands on workshop, a candle pouring bar, even private sessions and special events.
In fact services like groupon or yelp do usually offer good, fairly complete and up to date listings of class offerings in the area – and you might even find a private lesson or teacher, or open shop time time. So you might want to check out some of the leading ones, like:
