Why an Article on the Best Blacksmithing Classes?

In my fairly extensive research and digging around I have realized that there is very little available on the web right now about finding classes and instruction for the various kinds of crafting. In fact, if you want to find the best class for, in this case, learning how to blacksmith, it might be quite a bit more difficult than you imagine.

How can I find a great blacksmithing class near me?

So I thought it would be super helpful to put together a list of the best available blacksmithing classes – including group and private lessons – for 16 cities and metro areas around the United States, and to include some of the best online classes and books as well. But first…

What Is Blacksmithing?

Blacksmithing is something we see far more in Western movies and TV shows than in real life, but it is a living art still practiced around the world. It is the process of working with metal in fire – to shape and finish things like tools, horseshoes, knives and swords and a whole range of both useful objects and art pieces.

A highly skilled and fairly difficult art, blacksmithing is also fairly dangerous, with open fire and literally red-hot metal, but the right teaching, supervision and supporting conditions can make the learning and practice of forgework both safe and easy. A good teacher, and a good class, will teach you the following:

As you can imagine, with open forge work and blacksmithing, proper education is absolutely crucial, and even if you’ve taken classes, and already mastered the basic blacksmithing skills, learning better techniques and practices, as well as reviewing and enforcing concepts around proper safety and work environment conditions can be enormously valuable – especially, again, if you learn from the right people!

What is the Best Way to Learn Blacksmithing?

I wanted to make sure that any perspective student could quickly and easily find the right instruction and instructors for learning smithing skills, whether you want a beginner blacksmithing class, more advanced classes, an online class, a local class or private teacher, or even the best books on learning Blacksmithing, so I put together this guide to answer some basic questions:

Is there a beginner blacksmithing class near me?

What is the best way to learn blacksmithing skills?

What blacksmithing tools will you need?

How can you learn the basic skills and forging techniques?

Is working with hot steel safe, and what kind of eye and ear protection is required?

What are the best private blacksmithing classes near me?

What are the best online classes for learning blacksmithing?

What are the best books for learning blacksmithing?

For local classes, I will concentrate on 16 cities and their metropolitan areas, with two subsections for each city, and so you will find below the best Blacksmithing classes and the best private Blacksmithing teachers for the following cities:

Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis / Saint Paul, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle

Following the listings of best local blacksmithing classes I will mention a few of the very best online Blacksmithing courses you can take, and then recommend a few of my favorite books for teaching yourself Blacksmithing.

What Are the Best Online Classes for Learning Blacksmithing in 2022?

Not everybody is able to attend class in person, because of location, schedule, social distancing / enforced isolation, or other reasons. Luckily there are a lot of other good options, and online learning is one of the best – especially if you can find a good teacher, good course content and well produced classes.

With forge work in particular, many will say that the idea of learning online is absolutely absurd, and yet there is a fairly good range of online classes available. You will, however, need to have your own forge, basic tools and safety equipment, which can be a relatively large expense, and with blacksmithing (even hand-making) you have to be extremely careful about safety considerations and focus when viewing online courses or videos.

Here I’ll offer some of my favorite online learning platforms, and especially ones that are particularly good for learning various creative hobbies – which do require a certain approach, a particular type of teacher and teaching style and very clear visuals and instructions to be really successful.

So when people ask me specifically:

What is the best online class for Learning Blacksmithing?

What is the best online school for arts and crafts?

How can I learn Blacksmithing online?

Are there any really good online learning platforms?

…based on my experience and feedback from lots of other makers in the community I have the following recommendations:

Skillshare

You may already be familiar with Skillshare, since they are becoming one of the most popular, best known and most highly related learning platforms online – and quite well known for arts and crafts classes.

You may not know, though, that Skillshare has some of the best classes for making Blacksmithing, which start with the basics and are really perfect for beginners. There are only about a half dozen classes total, but they are all excellent.

Alec Steele’s Online School of Blacksmithing

With experience, understanding, absolute awareness of the importance of safety and focus, and a deep respect for the art of the smithy, Alec Steele’s online courses are the best of the best, and appropriate even for a total beginner.

Alec Steele’s Online School of Blacksmithing

YouTube

It must be said that YouTube has some pretty amazing free content, and the Blacksmithing tutorials and classes are, or at least can be, pretty awesome. Another great thing about YouTube is the search engine, which when you’re searching for something as basic and popular as, say, “learning Blacksmithing” comes up with brilliant results right at the top of the page.

But if that all isn’t easy enough for you, just click on this link and you’ll see what I mean!

YouTube “Learning Blacksmithing”

And I should mention a man who is something of a legend, both on YouTube and in the blacksmithing community – Torbjörn Åhman. Brilliantly clear, complete and well produced videos on all levels!

Torbjörn Åhman

And I’ll close out this comprehensive online guide to the best resources for learning Blacksmithing with a short list of some of my favorite books on the subject.

I had originally planned to list beginners and advanced books on blacksmithing separately, but as I reviewed my own personal picks I realized that I greatly prefer books that offer both – ones that start at a basic, total beginner level, assuming no experience or knowledge, but also include advanced techniques, and often a lot of other re

[sources, ideas and inspirations for people of all levels.

So while the first few books are really geared more at newbies, you will find that, even if you have no prior experience, any of these books will be a great choice and a wonderful resource.

What Are the Best Local Classes for Learning Blacksmithing in 2022?

Anybody can use one of the countless online specialty search services for finding places that offer blacksmithing classes- whether introductory courses where you can learn techniques like forging steel, heat treating, proper body mechanics, forge safety and more – as well as private sessions, blacksmithing clubs to join, open forge times, shows and demonstrations and more.

In fact services like groupon or yelp do usually offer good, fairly complete and up to date listings of class offerings in the area – and you might even find a private lesson or teacher, or open shop time time. So you might want to check out some of the leading ones, like:

Usually these search services are really easy to use, by simply typing in what you’re looking for – “Woodworking classes” – and the area, city or state – “Monowi, Nebraska” – and then it’s just enter, wait and wade through the somewhat random listings.

Or, better yet, you can instead simply scroll down and find your area in the list below and try one of my personal recommendations, for a fun and fascinating beginner blacksmithing class, knife making classes,

You can contact them to find out the class schedule, where classes are taught, if they accept both beginner and advanced students, what kind of eye and ear protection is required
