There are also a lot (really, a lot!) of choices out there – a seemingly endless range of tablet brands, models and configurations, and more coming out every day – but a few select tablets with large screens really stand out as offering the best performance, reliability and value.

We will talk a little about the benefits of a large screen tablet, and also discuss what to look for (and what to avoid) in your new tablet. Then I will list my top choices for artists, including Apple, Windows, Android and Chromebook.

Why Get a Tablet with a Large Screen?

I guess the benefits of working on a really big tablet seem pretty self-evident, and we needn’t go into that much detail here, but…

The more that I think about it – about the way big tablets can improve the work and play of artists and creators (or anybody else, for that matter), the way my own big iPad Pro has changed my life, the numerous advantages and benefits of a larger screen over a smaller one – the more excited I get, and the more I realize why I wanted to write this piece.

So please, indulge me as I go into it a bit, with what I consider to be the main benefits for artists (or, again, any user) of a tablet with a large display screen:

Ease of use

I know people with freakishly eagle-like eyesight who still have trouble working on smaller screens – finding the right menu or button, reading small text or finding their way around a page. Even if they can see and find everything, though, people can still struggle using small menus, selecting commands or pressing tiny buttons or links.

Big screens, though, make all of this so much easier, and can make any kind of usage – whether work or play – more enjoyable and effective, less frustrating and tiring.

Entertainment

Videos, movies and TV shows, art, photographs or any kind of audio/video content, have a presence on a bigger screen that can have dramatically more impact than on any smaller tablet, phablet or phone, as well as simply making things easier to see and less straining to view.

Even the sound is often significantly better on large tablets, even if only because of the larger speakers and/or the greater separation between them, and thus larger, more precise and immersive stereo and surround imaging.

Stability

Whether you’re working, watching videos or just idly surfing, a big tablet offers a kind of physical stability which can make things easier and put your in a little more control.

This weight and structural stability can also make a big difference in a tablet’s long term durability and reliability.

Portability

Yeah, this one may seem a little mixed up, since many people avoid larger tablets thinking they’re not that portable. In truth, even the biggest tablet on my list is still pretty light, and will fit into almost any bag or pack.

The size and strength of the best larger tablets can even make them safer to schlep – for one thing, you are more aware of them than you would be a smaller unit that kind of disappears into the depths of your kit, and also they can simply withstand more bumps and shocks.

Working on a Big Screen

The main benefit of a large screen tablet for an artist, crafter, photographer or any kind of creator becomes delightfully obvious when you start to work on that big, beautiful screen.

You can realize levels of detail, precision and control on a big tablet’s working surface that are simply not possible on any smaller screen, and can see your work better as it unfolds.

Intricate details, subtle gestures, relationships and geometry, colors, light and shadows and their gradations, negative and positive space, overall composition – they all are easier to see, achieve and get just right.

Also, as one more of the many, many benefits of creating or editing art on a big tablet screen, you will experience much less stress and fatigue, as your eyes can be more relaxed, your physical gestures larger and more natural, and your levels of effort and frustration markedly lower.

Work on a Big Screen

No, not a typo, but an appreciation of how beautiful art looks on a big, high quality tablet screen. Whether you’re critically analyzing and editing your own artwork, or using your tablet as an electronic portfolio and displaying pieces to potential clients, a good, large screen can make all the difference, displaying colors, light and shadow, large details and small, and overall composition and relationship to best effect, and making your art as beautiful and powerful as possible.

And if you’re looking at the work of others, for inspiration or just pure pleasure, all of the same applies.

What Should You Look For in the Best Tablets with Big Screens?

The most important thing for many artists – and perhaps many other users – is the beauty and quality of the screen, which can have a huge impact on not just how effectively you can work, and how great your work will look, but on literally everything you do on your new tablet.

And while some will say that a larger screen needs lower resolution, to me (and, thankfully, to the companies and engineers who design tablets) the opposite seems true. A big screen that is sharp, bright, contrasty and saturated can be overwhelmingly beautiful, and a great joy to see and to use.

But there are a lot of other factors as well, and even a short list of the most important things to look for in a tablet with a large screen should include:

Display quality

Again, a high resolution screen with accurate, well saturated colors, great brightness and contrast, accurate alignment and geometry, will make an enormous difference in how well and effectively you can create art, in making edits and corrections, in viewing both finished pieces and work in progress.

And all other uses, from serious to fun, benefit as well, and your experience will be more effective and enjoyable on many different levels.

Working surface

For artists in particular, an optimized screen surface, and screen to pen interaction, will allow for both better flow and more control, and can make it so much easier to achieve your artistic vision.

Physical stability and durability

We are probably going to take our new tablets with us – maybe everywhere we go! – and it is really important to get one that can take the occasional bumps and jostles in stride, as well as stand up to perhaps heavy daily use.

Long term reliability

We are also probably going to fall a little in love with our new big tablet, and want the relationship to last as long as possible, and for our lovely new toy to work with perfect reliability every time – you know, to avoid lovers’ spats and resentments.

Performance

Here I mean things like processing power and speed, storage space and access speed, and all of the technical specs that can make working with any kind of artwork so much easier, more successful and more effective. Not just things like 3D modeling or high resolution videography, but even paintings and drawings can require quite a bit of memory and processing power, as well as storage space – as can the highest quality movies and music.

How Can You Find the Best Large Screen Tablet for You and Your Needs?

Our checklist of what to look for in your next big screen tablet may seem a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry! I’ve considered all of these factors, and a lot more, in selecting the best tablets with large screens, and I’m ready to offer my answers to some of the following questions:

What is the Best Apple Tablet with a Large Screen?

What is the Best Windows Tablet with a Large Screen?

What is the Best Android Tablet with a Large Screen?

What is the Best Chromebook Tablet with a Large Screen?

Is the Apple iPad Pro the Best Tablet for Artists?

Is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ As Good as Everybody Says?

Which are Better Large Screen Tablets for Windows – Wacom MobileStudio Pro or Microsoft Surface?

In using so many different art tablets, and really spending time making art, and doing all sorts of other things, on larger tablet screens, I have a really good idea which tablets work well and which don’t, which will hold up and which will give up, and which ones prove to be a great joy to work with in pretty much every way.

And so I have focused on a few top choices – including, when possible, both great premium and budget picks – for all four major platforms:

I will organize them in just this way, and talk a little about each recommendation.

All you really need to do is figure out which platform you want or need to work with, and how much you want to spend, and you can be totally confident that the corresponding pick will be a fantastic choice – a great tablet to have and use, a brilliant investment and a great value.

So let’s get going, with this list of best big screen tablets!

I may be a bit biased, but for my money the iPad Pro is the best art tablet on the market today.

Everything is just right:

For me the most important of these qualities connect to the wonderful iPad Pro screen, which is so amazing to work on with an Apple Pencil, so natural feeling and wonderfully flowing, and the look of the display itself – truly the best of the best.

And all of this is dramatically amplified and enhanced with the bigger 12.9 inch screen, which not only has incredible impact but makes all my work so much easier and better, and literally inspires me even as it allows me to realize new levels of artistic creativity.

So yes, the Apple iPad Pro with the big 12.9 inch Liquid Retina screen is my own personal tablet of choice, and is thought of by so many creators as the best tablet on the market today. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and would never want to be without mine.

Also make sure you get the Apple Pencil, which is not included but definitely a must-have, and you might also want to consider the brilliant Apple Magic Keyboard, which makes the iPad Pro even more useful (and fabulous) and will also offer welcome protection when you’re not using it.

If you still want the best of the best, but are on a slightly tighter budget – or, for whatever reason, prefer a slightly smaller tablet – the 11 inchApple iPad Pro offers all of the same features and benefits, but with a slightly smaller – though still big – working area and slightly less – though still big – impact.

Still a super-premium art tablet with large screen, absolutely as good as it gets, and a great choice for any artist on any level.

And while you want the exact same Apple Pencil that you’d use for the 12.9 inch iPad Pro, remember that you’ll need the smaller version of the Apple Magic Keyboard for the 11 inch Pro.

A bit of a step down from the wonderfully large 12.9 inch iPad Pro, in both size and performance, the Apple iPad Air is still a large tablet, and still has the gorgeous Liquid Retina display, and the same ideal pen to screen feeling, and in a lighter and less expensive package.

While the bigger screen does have more impact, and lots of artists like having the control, precision and visibility a larger working area can afford, many actually prefer the remarkably thin and light, but very rigid and strong, iPad Air – it is as portable as it gets, and is easy to hold and work on for extended creative sessions.

And it should be said that even though the Pro’s screen is bigger, it isn’t higher resolution. The Apple iPad Pro does have a bit better brightness, but actual resolution is the same on the Air, and it still has the same fully laminated anti-reflective screen, the same amazing color fidelity and saturation, and the same optimized surface, which, again, is so great with the Apple Pencil.

So while the iPad Pro has a bit more impact, and also gives you a bit more working space, the iPad Air is still a truly great large screen tablet that’s just wonderful to work on, and a perfect budget choice for creativity and everything else.

And again think about getting an Apple Magic Keyboard, which can make the Air even more useful and productive, and does a great job protecting it as well.

With Windows tablets the situation may, at first blush at least, seem a little perplexing – an embarrassment of riches, as they say…

I mean, you have the best tablet in the world, in the Wacom MobileStudio Pro, and then you have, well, the best tablet in the world, in the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio.

But there are a couple of considerations which might make choosing between these two champions a bit easier:

So let’s look very briefly at each of these amazing large screen windows tablets.

The big, beautiful and impactful high resolution Wacom 16 inch screen is probably the most impressive thing initially about this Wacom tablet, and it may well be the best screen available for artists, with such range of light and shadow, such high resolution and such perfect alignment that images of any kind come alive in an almost startling way, and work on any level is not just possible, but much easier.

The accuracy – including the industry leading color correctness of the MobileStudio Pro – also allows top artists to make sure that their work will be fully compatible with industry standards and larger projects or campaigns, will fully satisfy clients and job requirements, and will transfer perfectly to any other media or display system.

But that’s just one factor in making the Wacom MobileStudio Pro the best of the best. Fantastic interaction between the wonderful Wacom Pro Pen 2 and the perfectly optimized working surface of the touchscreen, fast and flawless processing, enough RAM, processing power and storage space to work with any and all imaging software, and a sturdiness and stability that makes working easier and assures both daily and long term durability and reliability.

An overbuilt and awesomely accurate and high performance tablet, designed by top artists to be used by top artists, the Wacom StudioPro offers the best work experience in creating, viewing and editing any kind of art, and is the best tablet with a large screen for artists on the market today.

And yet, with all of the lavish praise I just laid on the Wacom, I’m not sure it would be my first choice!

Ok, let me put that in a slightly different way. If I wanted a Windows tablet with a large screen, and I was using it exclusively for art, I would take the Wacom in a second, and I’m sure it is the best tablet for artwork currently available – yes, in many ways even better than my beloved iPad Pro!

But if I was a top level artists – or a bottom level one, for that matter, or a beginner, a student, an eager amateur enthusiast, or any artist at all – and I wanted a superb tablet for creating and working on my art, and a great tablet for all other computer-type activity, I would definitely get this absolutely gorgeous new Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio instead.

A proper laptop that also folds fully flat for the total tablet experience, the Studio is a marvel of sleek, modern design, and looks and feels ultra-premium. And while it’s still brand new, if all of the other Surfaces Microsoft has made are any indication it should also prove to e a tremendously well made, durable machine that will offer years of trouble free operation.

While it may not have the same ultra-high resolution as the Wacom, and the Wacom’s pen to screen interface may be a tiny bit better for both flow and precision, this Surface Studio still has a gloriously beautiful touchscreen display, with high resolution, incredible brightness and contrast, top tier color accuracy, saturation and subtlety, and delightful pen-screen interaction.

The Studio is as advanced as it gets on all technological fronts, with not just a beautiful screen (which also features an ultra powerful Nvidia Ampere graphics processor and an especially high refresh rate), but also the very latest 11th generation Intel quad-core CPU, two thunderbolt adaptors (which easily replace the older Surface Connect Port and offer unparalleled speed and flexibility in connecting), fantastic cameras and audio and amazing battery life – especially considering the features and performance!

If you are an artist on any level, from beginner to serious fine artist or elite working professional, the Microsoft Surface Studio, with its big 14.4 inch screen, will serve you perfectly in anything and everything you need and want to do, and is also unquestionably one of the finest personal laptop computers on the market today for any and all other uses.

And remember, the Studio does not come with a digital pencil, and while there are a lot of choices out there that will work fine, or at least ok, the best choices by far are the Microsoft Surface Pen, or if you like a slightly thinner pencil, the Surface Slim Pen 2.

Microsoft Surface Go 3

The Microsoft Surface Studio is, without question, one of the most exciting and desirable new computers to hit the market in many, many years, but it is a bit pricey – not for what you get, of course, but yeah.

And while there are a lot of other incredible Surface large screen tablets you can choose from, for a bit less money, the thing is that once you bundle one of the mid-range Surface tablets with a keyboard you’re almost at the level of the Surface Studio – in price, if not in performance.

So my recommendation is to go cheap (though there is absolutely nothing “cheap” about any Microsoft Surface – possibly the most premium line of computers this side of Apple) with the Surface Go 3.

Yes, it is a big jump down in price – I think it is currently the least expensive Microsoft Surface available – but the Go 3 is, for all of that, an absolutely amazing machine, with a super-cool design that is as usable as it is beautiful.

And while it doesn’t have the biggest screen – 10.5 inches – it is still plenty big for even the most detailed and precise work, and has that famously flow and working feedback of the best Surface tablets – not to mention great brightness, contrast, resolution, and color accuracy and range.

And the Microsoft Surface Go 3 is, even in its most advanced configuration, and including the optional Microsoft Surface Go Type Cover, well less than half the price of the Studio.

A great Windows tablet with large screen for the new artist, art student or any artist, crafter, photographer or other creative type on a budget, and a surprisingly powerful personal computer as well, the Microsoft Surface Go 3 is one of the best values on the market today, and a wonderful machine to use.

And again, make sure that you get a Microsoft Surface Pen or Surface Slim Pen 2 with your Go 3, as well as the beautiful Microsoft Go Type Cover.

NEW Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ Android Tablet

12.4” Large AMOLED Screen, 128GB - 256GB Storage, Wi-Fi 6E, Ultra Wide Camera, S Pen Included, Long Lasting Battery

For Android users the choice is pretty clear – yes, there are a lot of different companies making large, or at least largish, Android tablets, and quite a few pretty cool models to choose from, but one is so far superior to the rest that all that comparison shopping, research and review reading is kind of pointless – and, ironically, I say this while I’m writing a review!

But seriously, the Samsung Galaxy S8+ is the best large Android tablet on the market today, and is also easily the best Android tablet for artists.

With a big 12.4 inch screen, the Galaxy S8+ is a large tablet, and offers a really nice size for creating art, allowing not only intricate detail but also larger spontaneous gestures and real flow. It is also the best looking screen – among Samsung products and also among any and all Android tablets – with ultra high resolution, great brightness and contrast, and color accuracy, range and saturation that are simply not available on any other Android tablets.

And with the included Galaxy S Pen, which is also the best of the best, the experience of making art is first rate, with both flow and resistance at ideal levels, a really natural feeling and great performance, and without any kind of delays or skips while you’re working.

The fast and powerful octa-core processor offers similarly strong performance, with no delays or other issues when running the most powerful art software – even when multitasking or with very large and complex art files – and still the S8+ has great battery life. Even compared to other Samsung tablets, which are all nice, this is a whole new level of computing power, and compared to most tablets on the Android platform it’s kind of a revelation.

So an easy choice for best Android tablet with large screen for artists, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ is also easily the best Android tablet on the market today and, even in its most advanced and powerful setup, a great value.

It’s also pretty clear which affordable big screen Android tablet is best, and it’s also Samsung.

The Galaxy Tab S8 is pretty similar to its more expensive sibling, with a nice, bright, contrasty screen in a slightly smaller size – 11 inches instead of 12.4 – and the same fast and powerful processor. It has the same nice, sharp cameras and beautiful stereo sound, and the same premium look and feel – as well as every day and long term reliability – as the S8+.

The only warning I would give is to not spend a lot of time working on the S8+’s larger touchscreen before buying the smaller Tab S8 – the 11 inch screen is really quite big, and fantastic for creating, viewing and editing art, but the 12.4 inch does offer a bit of a more satisfying experience. But really, if you only have and use the 11 inch S8, you’ll be absolutely thrilled.

And not just with the screen – the Galaxy Tab S8 is a powerful, well built tablet for artists or for anybody else, with plenty or RAM and internal storage, and the included Galaxy S Pen offers a working experience that’s just as good as on the top of the line S8+.

Itself not an inexpensive tablet, the S8 is still a good two hundred dollars less than our premium choice, and is in every way except for screen size as good a tablet, and one of the best values you can find – easy to understand why the Galaxy Tab S8 is one of the most highly rated and popular Android products on the market today, and one of the cornerstones of Samsung’s stellar reputation.

To find the best Chromebook big screen tablet is a little bit of a tricky proposition.

On one hand, we can say that the Google machines themselves are pretty special, with great performance, nice screens and working surfaces, and a very slick, premium presentation overall, and it really would be nice, and easy, to recommend them.

The problem is, nobody seems to be sure (maybe not even the company themselves) what the future of Google tablets is – their most recent models are at least a few years old now, and any news of new releases seems more like rumor than verified fact or actual promise.

Luckily there is an absolutely brilliant alternative – in fact, probably a better Chromebook tablet in every way – possibly even cooler as well – and a better choice for any artist – the Acer Spin 13 inch convertible tablet / laptop.

And, yes, Best Affordable as well!

In fact, the Spin is so great, and at such a surprisingly low price, that it is my choice not only for best big screen Chromebook tablet for artists overall, but best affordable Chromebook tablet with a large screen too.

For this low price you get, amazingly enough, a latest generation Intel I5 processor, a bright high resolution screen with tons of depth and life, and with a very nice and usable working surface, and the premium Acer Stylus. Not only are the stylus and screen optimized for working together, and offer wonderful control and flow, the foldable design of the Spin tablet PC offers different work configurations – the fully flat tablet mode and the tent mode especially good for working on art.

While lots of even the biggest and most major tablet and PC manufacturers are getting a bit of a bad reputation these days, and the quality of their products seems to be slipping more and more every year, it seems the opposite for Acer, whose Spin is an incredibly tough, well made and reliable product that is really well designed and so nice to use.

Not so tricky afterall, then, I guess! The best Chromebook tablet with large screen for artists today is definitely the Acer Spin 13.5 inch tablet / laptop convertible. It is also my choice for the best affordable big screen, and – especially since Chromebooks work perfectly with Android apps available on the Google Play Store – is widely considered the best Chromebook overall for general personal computing.

If you want an even more affordable choice, though, and don’t mind a slightly smaller screen, the Acer Spin 11 inch convertible tablet / laptop is pretty much just as brilliant, and even less expensive – an amazing value!
