A good inkjet printer is one of the most important tools for any artist, but it can also be one of the most expensive – not necessarily the printer itself, but the price of the ink!

So, we’ll talk about what exactly an ink tank printer is and why it can save you so much money (really, a lot of money!), and then I’ll offer a list of the best ink tank printers on the market today.

What is an Ink Tank Printer?

An ink tank printer, which can also be called a tank printer, a supertank printer or a refillable printer, is essentially exactly the same as any normal inkjet printer, but with one basic (and brilliant) difference – instead of small, expensive ink cartridges that you have to replace with alarming frequency, they have refillable ink tanks – one for each color – which you fill from larger bottles of ink.

These ink reservoirs are pretty big, so you don’t have to refill them often, and when you do it is a breeze – often, in fact, easier than replacing cartridges.

The best ink tank printers are often not more expensive than normal inkjet printers, or only slightly so, and they will save you an enormous amount of money on ink!

Why Get an Ink Tank Printer?

So yeah, that may be the main reason to consider making your next new inkjet printer a refillable ink tank model – saving money – but there are at least a couple of other important benefits to the best supertank printers:

Save Money

We have to start here, because in fact an ink tank printer can save you literally up to 90 percent on ink costs. If you print a lot, you probably have some idea how much you spend on ink, and so also have an idea of how big your savings will be.

But even if you print somewhat regularly, or even infrequently, you can still save a significant amount.

Save the Environment

It’s estimated that in the United States alone people use up, and throw out, as many as two billion (!) ink cartridges a year. The manufacture of all of those cartridges has a large environmental impact, and of course they all end up in landfills when they’re empty .

But with a new refillable ink tank printer you never have to buy or get rid of another ink cartridge again!

Save Time and Frustration

If you have a normal ink jet printer, you know how frequently you need to replace the cartridges, and how it can interrupt your work flow. Even if you don’t print that much, it seems that one of the colors goes empty, and that infernal warning light begins to blink, just when we need to print something ultra important.

An ink cartridge printer can totally save you from that headache – you can go much, much longer between refills, and work and print documents and any artwork without worry.

Finding the Best Ink Tank Printer

In selecting your next new ink tank printer, you really want to focus on the same qualities and features you would with any inkjet printer, and it’s really a pretty basic – but pretty important – list:

For artists in particular (though this can, I guess, be just as important to any user) things like resolution, color accuracy and saturation and the ability to print on larger paper and on other media (like canvas, cardstock and vinyl, for example) can also be big factors.

And for anybody, stuff like wireless printing, google cloud print, large paper capacity, auto document feeders and rear feeding slots, auto duplex printing, built in scanners and copiers, easy and intuitive controls, and on and on, all can be important.

So our list of best ink tank printers will focus on all of that, and you’ll find a great range of printers that are made well, designed well, offer real versatility and flexibility in use, and have outstanding print quality, with accurate, vivid and beautiful colors, crisp, clear lines and tons of detail.

At the end of this article, in the Bonus section, I will mention a few other ways to save money printing, but probably none of them will save you as much as your new ink tank printer will – so, let’s get right to the list!

“Best Overall” is a fairly flexible term in this ink tank printer buyer’s guide – I mean, there is no doubt that this ET-8550 is the best overall for artists, even just based on the extraordinarily beautiful, dynamic, accurate and long lasting prints it puts out.

At the same time, for more normal use the ET-5850 below is a fine choice too, and for high volumes the Pro ET-16650 above is another strong contender for best overall.

But I do love a printer like the 8550 – one that gives absolutely best-of-the-best prints, and makes my work look so spectacular, while doing everything else just as well.

And considering its fast print speed, its ability to handle large documents, its material quality and durability, and its intelligent and highly usable design, the Epson EcoTank ET-8550 wide format printer is the clear winner, and the best ink tank printer overall on our list.

The Canon GX6020 all in one is a wonderful printer to use. The big, clear LCD display and control panel are simple and intuitive, the overall layout just makes sense, and this printer always seems to work perfectly.

Although the stated print resolution is not as high as other printers, this seems to be a quite conservative spec, and you will be amazed how consistently sharp and clear your prints really are, with depth, detail and impact far beyond many printers in this price range.

The scanner, too, is far better than you might expect at this level, and a wonderful thing for any artist to have on hand.

And the color printing is glorious, the superb Canon pigment-based inks offering superior color accuracy and saturation and exceptionally long life and resistance to the elements.

A really useful and high quality all in one printer, scanner and copier that is fast, reliable and very inexpensive to run, the Canon GX6020 is the perfect affordable personal or office printer, and a great tool for working artists.

One of the first things people notice with the middle range of Epson printers – whether they’re refillable ink tank printers or otherwise – is that they have the same print resolution as the less expensive ones in the Epson line.

And yet, in actual use we can see a different story. I have to assume that it has to do with the accuracy and consistency of registration – that is, the placement of ink dots on the page – and this in turn is related to the higher material and build quality of these more expensive printers.

But whatever the reason, and whatever the published specs say, this EcoTank ET-3760 EcoTank printer has markedly clearer and more detailed printing, and is a wonderful choice for even discerning artists and crafters.

It also prints beautiful colors, with a vibrancy and accuracy that make digital art, photographs or scanned copies of traditional media look amazing. And it does all of this at a much higher speed than lower priced models.

A great printer, that also includes a great scanner / copier, the Epson ET-3760 doesn’t just perform brilliantly, but is clearly built to last, and should offer this high level of quality for many years. An easy choice for best mid-priced ink tank printer, and a great megatank printer for any artist – or anybody else.

I’m really amazed at how beautiful the printing is on this inexpensive little Canon printer.

Not only does it have high resolution, for really crisp images and amazing detail, but the Canon Pixma G620 also has a full six ink system, including red and gray inks, for accuracy, subtlety and range that you would never expect at this price level.

This makes the G620 a perfect affordable choice for any artist, photographer, crafter or creator, as do the rear feed document feeder and wide range of materials you can print on, and the high quality built in flatbed scanner.

But the price, the low running costs, the incredibly easy operation and the reliability – both day to day and over the long term – make it a great choice for pretty much anybody, and a really great value as well. Still, as great as this is as an all around general use unit, the print quality is what really impresses, and earns the Canon Pixma G620 and easy and strong recommendation.

Epson makes the most popular ink tanks printers on the market today, but it has to be said that Canon is the clear winner in the budget printer category, and that their Pixma series printers are pretty amazing for the low, low price.

This Canon Pixma G6020, for example, is under 300 dollars, and yet has very high resolution printing and surprisingly subtle, saturated and accurate colors. This printer uses a special hybrid ink system, with pigment based black ink and dye based colors, which gives really crisp and long lasting text prints and, again, colors that really spring from the page.

It is also surprising in how sturdy it is, how quiet and reliable, and how it just seems to work perfectly every single time, even over the long haul.

The G6020 is not the fastest printer on the market – Canon seeming to prefer stability and reliability over speed at this price point – but it is not by any means maddeningly slow, and the built in copier / scanner, the rear document feed, and the controls, overall design and layout make this a wonderfully useful printer, and pretty amazing for the money.

With about the same print quality as the G620 above, this Canon Pixma G1220 – at about a hundred dollars less – is a pretty special printer for the money.

Of course something has to give, and in this case the 1220 has somewhat slower print speeds, and is a single-function printer – that is, it just prints, and does not include scanner/copier functions.

But it is still a Canon printer, and so it’s well built, easy to use and very consistent in performance. And as a refillable ink tank printer it will save you enormous amounts of money if you do quite a bit of printing.

Even if you don’t, though, the Pixma G1220 is still a seriously good value, with much higher material quality, reliability and printing than we might expect at this price point, and is clearly the best budget ink tank printer available on the market today.

Bonus: How to Save Even More Money Printing

If you purchase a new ink tank printer, you’ve already taken the first step to saving lots and lots of money with printing.

Still, though, you may be wondering what else you can do to save even more – if you’re running your own business, or even running your own home, every bit of savings helps, and a few further steps can save you more and more!

So I have put together just a very few tips, tricks and good practices that can help you save money on printing – and, it should be said, help the environment as well.

Work collaboratively online

A lot of artists, writers and other creatives – and a lot of office workers as well – are used to printing drafts of things to share with coworkers or collaborators, but this is wasteful and expensive!

But if you get more and more in the habit of working in the clouds – or at least saving in the clouds – and sharing your work that way, you can save a considerable amount of money, not to mention time and effort.

And if you’re worried about people making changes to your work without your consent, or even your knowledge, you can lock and password protect pretty much any file format, or save things as PDF, so that people can see and review the doc but can’t change it.

Compare print to screen

If you are more comfortable with seeing and critically assessing artwork in print, you might want to spend some time really looking at a good print of a piece of art and comparing it carefully with the same piece on the screen.

If you really just take your time, not trying to accomplish anything, just really looking, scanning and comparing, you will begin to improve your ability to really see and assess work on screen, until eventually you can do it as easily and as effectively as you have been able to in print.

In fact, if you create your work digitally anyway you probably have the eye for critically evaluating on screen already, and you might find that it actually works better for you.

Lower print quality can use significantly less ink, as can smaller prints.

Just make sure that the print is big enough for you to see and do what you need to see and do, so you don’t have to just print a larger copy anyway. And, of course, if you’re printing to critically assess, edit and make changes, lower quality printing may not work.

But if it does work, such a simple method can save a lot over time – even with an ink tank printer.

Double-check your work

Whenever you print out a “final” copy of something – or any copy, for that matter – take time to really check your work before clicking print, just to make sure there are no errors or problems that would cause you to need to reprint before proceeding.

If you are only printing one page every once in a while, this will still save you a little, but if you print often, or go on to make copies of that blasted imperfect page, this can actually save you a lot.

And even if you are printing a work copy, rough draft or early version, still making sure to find and correct obvious and easily fixable errors is good practice, and will keep the perfectionists among us (we know who we are) from reprinting even those early proofs.

Pretty obvious, I guess, but it is still good to remind ourselves to use the other side of a printed page to print non-critical stuff, or to print text copy, for example, on both sides of the page.

This doesn’t always work for artwork, of course, but again, if it is not a final print, to show a client or for your portfolio, it might be just fine.

And even if you don’t reprint on the other side of used paper, you can always use it for doodling, notes or shopping lists, or repurpose it in a craft project!

Buy ink on sale

Many people are concerned about ink cartridges running dry, but this is definitely an overstated concern, and if you print with any regularity you don’t need to worry about it.

More to the point, though, is that it will take years for a new, sealed bottle of ink to dry out and become unusable, especially if it is stored as the manufacturer suggests.

So, if you find ink for your new ink tank printer at a scandalously low price, buy extra and lay up a reserve.

Just don’t get too enthusiastic, lest you end up buying so much that you can’t possibly use it all before its expiration date!
