Embroidery is a beautiful, time-honored art form that has been a part of so many cultures around the world for hundreds of years. Recently, however, it seems that the tradition of passing this beautiful craft from generation to generation has kind of slowed down, and many of us need to teach ourselves how to embroider. Luckily, there are lots of great embroidery kits to help the beginner to learn – as well as beautiful sets for the intermediate and advanced levels as well.

  • What does a beginner need for embroidery?
  • Can you teach yourself embroidery?
  • Are embroidery kits a good way to learn?
  • What’s the difference between cross stitch and embroidery?
  • What is Embroidery?
  • How do I start embroidering?
  • What are the different kinds of embroidery?
  • What are the different basic embroidery stitches?
  • Is embroidery difficult?

What is Embroidery?

Let’s start with the basics – what exactly do we mean when we say “embroidery?”

Embroidery is the art of stitching designs into fabric. Now this may mean decorating home furnishings, like pillow cases or duvet covers, adding designs or figurations to clothing, hats, bags or backpacks, making wall hangings or a “sampler” – a sort of display piece which displays not only a lovely design but also the embroiderer’s skill.

You can embroider detailed pictures, simple objects, designs or decorative patterns, words and mottos – really whatever you want. In fact, although embroidery is thought to be a kind of old-fashioned, or at least traditional, craft, you can actually even make modern, abstract and random designs or images. Really, the sky – or at least your own imagination – is the limit.

What’s the Best Way to Learn Embroidery?

Again, it used to be that the best way to learn was from a parent, grandparent or other family member, but sadly that just doesn’t happen as much anymore.

But lots of people are finding that teaching yourself – with good embroidery starter kits, for instance – can be a fun and joyous experience, and just as effective. And it is an excellent way to keep this most beautiful traditional art alive and well, and to make really lovely items – for yourself, for gifts, for home decoration, even for craft challenges and competitions!

And there certainly is a lot to learn! By some counts, there are at least 15 basic stitches, and lots and lots of different types or styles of embroidery, including:

  • Cross Stitching
  • Crewel Work
  • Drawn Thread and Pulled Thread
  • Needlepoint
  • Whitework and Blackwork
  • Stumpwork
  • Patchwork, Fish Scale and Ribbon Embroidery

That is really just a tiny sampler, so to speak, including some of the most basic and the most popular types of embroidery, but really there seem to be an almost endless range of types and styles.

But don’t get discouraged! Learning the most basic stitches and styles is really easy, and even with those basics you can create absolutely stunning designs, as well as having a great foundation for learning more if you want later.

And it is so easy to teach yourself these days – either as a total beginner or a more advanced embroiderer – especially if you have the right embroidery kit.

How Can You Find the Best Embroidery Kits?

Well, that’s what this article is all about. Between my own experience with embroidery and fabric decorating, and feedback I’ve gotten from friends, other artists and crafters, and even some of my students, I have put together a list of the best embroidery kits for beginners and more advanced students.

I will first list some wonderful embroidery kits for teaching yourself from scratch, or for those with very little experience. Then we will look at a few excellent embroidery kits for people with more experience, beautifully designed to challenge you and take you to the next level.

This three-design kit is a perfect example of how great Caydo starter sets can be, with everything you need to not just learn the most basic and simple techniques, but gently push and challenge yourself to a slightly higher level. Still, although this kit can take you from utter beginner to adept intermediate in just three pretty pictures, it is remarkably easy to use and follow. A very high quality kit and an easy choice for best embroidery kit for beginners.

I should also say that really all Caydo kits are first rate, and easily recommendable, and so you might want to check out the Caydo Amazon Store for lots more great embroidery products.

As perfect as the Caydo starter kit just above is for beginners, some of us may want an even gentler and simpler approach to learning, and the Yinva floral pattern learning kit certainly offers everything you need to get started, and in a fun and beautiful way.

The clear instructions make the most basic stitches easy to learn, and the simple patterns make beautiful flowers easy to create – and with such lovely results appearing before your eyes, you are more likely to feel encouraged and good about the process, and to continue and advance.

Big Set
Caydo 313 Piece Embroidery Kit with Organizer

Best “Sky’s the Limit” Beginner’s Embroidery Kit

216 Color Threads, 4 Aida Cloth, 6 Embroidery Hoops, Cross Stitch Tools and Instructions for Adults Beginners

Another kit from the wonderful craft company Caydo, this big set may seem like a bit more than a beginner’s kit, but that is exactly why I selected it as one of the best basic embroidery learning kits – the potential it offers.

In addition to clear, detailed instructions, suitable to an absolute beginner, this kit offers simple but beautiful starter patterns which will really whet your appetite and fuel your enthusiasm for the wonderful craft of embroidery. And, once your basic skills are at least somewhat in place, you have lots of tools to continue on – either with more patterns or using your own imagination.

If you are pretty sure already that embroidery is for you, and that once you learn the basics you will want to continue, this large starter set is for you. I love it, and can’t recommend it highly enough – any Caydo kit is fantastic, but this one especially gives you all the room you need to learn, practice and grow!

And I’ll say again that Caydo is a great company, and I really do recommend any and all of their embroidery products, so please check out the Caydo Amazon Store.

Best Embroidery Kit for Kids

Best Embroidery Kit for Kids

Kids Craft Starter Kit Gift for Ages 7 to 13, Includes 10 Projects, Embroidery Hoops, Fabric, Patterns, Floss, Needles, Needlepoint Cross Stitching Supplies

Some kid’s embroidery kits are pretty boring. They offer only one, or a few, too-basic patterns, and seem to be not very interested in sparking the child’s imagination. And many basic kits for children also don’t seem to be too concerned with quality, and offer significantly poorer materials, patterns and instructions.

But if I were buying an embroidery kit for a child, I would want a set that engages them, really teaches with clear and understandable instructions at an appropriate level, and encourages creativity even as it helps the child find their own abilities, talent and self confidence.

And that is exactly why I love the CraftLab kids’ embroidery kit, which is designed to make children really learn, and really love, embroidery, and to feel encouraged and confident along the way. This is, I’m sure, why so many others love this kit as well, and why it is so popular and highly rated. The best embroidery kit for children, and a great gift for your aspiring little crafter and her/his projects.

Please make sure to also check out the CraftLab Amazon Store, where you’ll find lots of different crafts kits for kids, and some great gift ideas.

Dimensions Embroidery Kits

Dimensions Embroidery makes several kits that are great for pushing your skill and your concentration and learning – or at least perfecting – new techniques.

With fourteen or eighteen count cross-stitch, plenty of back-stitching and quite elaborate designs, these are wonderful advanced kits. They add high quality threads and fabric, clear instructions and everything else you need, and – my favorite bit – the pictures themselves are so delightful – often fun, nostalgic and kind of fantastical.

I’ll include a few of my favorite advanced counted cross-stitch kits here, but for more selection from the wonderful Dimensions line please check out their Amazon Store.

Best Big Embroidery Supplies Kit

Cross Stitch Starter Set – 99 Cotton, 9 Metallic Embroidery Floss, 3 Hoops, Needles, Scissors + Other Embroidery Tools – Comfortable Organizer Bag – Hand Embroidery Kits for Adults

Our next recommendation in this buyer’s guide for best embroidery kits is,a kit that’s not exactly meant for learning, but one that includes a big selection of top-quality embroidery supplies for anybody who is just starting out, as well as intermediate or advanced stitchers.

Because, if you are still learning, or wanting to improve and expand your techniques, it is always, always best to have the best quality supplies – which make the whole process of learning and practicing more successful, more encouraging and more fun. And, of course, practice practice practice, with hopefully a large enough supply of materials that you can relax and keep going.

If you want your imagination to have all the room, and all the supplies, it needs to grow, the Atteret kit’s 100+ DMC coded floss spools, 3 sizes of hoop, needles and needle threaders, scissors and seam rippers, thimbles and fabric paint brushes really give you all you need. And, again, they are good enough quality for even the most advanced embroiderer, while serving the beginner beautifully.

Plus it comes in a really cool bag! If you are just learning, wanting to learn more, or just want a lot of really great materials to work with, the Atteret embroidery kit offers a large selection of first quality embroidery supplies at a reasonable price, and is highly recommended!

The first kit I’m recommending here is a simple and basic kit for beginners, just like the ones listed above, and yet there are a lot of reasons why I especially love this The Good Folk set so much (besides, of course, the company’s name) – the extremely high quality materials, the nice overall presentation, the clarity and ease of the instruction, and most of all the striking beauty of the designs. Really a perfect, and perfectly affordable kit for the beginner, and an absolute delight!

And the second kit is another absolute delight, this time brought to us by Lousie Maelys. This is also another ideal beginner’s kit, but with more advanced and complex patterns (which are also strikingly beautiful, just like The Good Folk) as well as a greater variety of stitches and techniques. This kit also offers exceptionally high quality of materials, and is a really great complete package. A great place to start, but offering a slightly higher challenge.

It has always seemed to me that the best way to learn embroidery is with a kit, like any of the great choices I’ve listed above. I love the idea of having simple, direct and undistracting instructions, clear and pretty patterns, and everything you need to realize them all in one place.

But some people really like learning embroidery from books, which do tend to give more complete and thorough explanations of stitches and techniques, as well as other background and information that the often simple printed guides included with embroidery kits can’t include.

Plus, books can offer lots more designs, ideas and inspirations, and can also include a lot more specific types of stitches and techniques.

If this sounds more like your style of learning – whether you’re an absolute beginner, an intermediate embroiderer looking to perfect and expand your technique or you’re all experienced, advanced and confident and want to push and challenge yourself – I will include here a list of a few of the best embroidery books on the market today, in order from beginning to advanced.

And I will recommend that, along with the book or books you select from this list, you also get one of the bigger embroidery supply kits I’ve listed above – like the Atteret Embroidery Kit or the even bigger Caydo 313 Piece Embroidery Kit – so that you will have everything you need to get stitching.
