Last year I wrote an article about one of my favorite crafting tools of all time, the Cricut cutting machine, a wonderful product that makes so many different projects and ideas not just possible but almost unbelievably easy. And now, a year later, Cricut has revamped their whole line, with the Cricut Explorer 3, The Cricut Maker 3, and the aptly named Cricut Joy.

In this article, I will try to find answers to these questions:

What is a Cricut?

Do I need a printer for my Cricut maker projects?

What kind of printer is best for a Cricut?

What printer does Cricut recommend?

Is inkjet printer or laser printer better for Cricut?

Do I need special ink cartridges for Cricut Print and Cut?

Since it’s been a while, let’s first talk a little bit about exactly what a Cricut is, what you use it for, and why you even need a printer to go with it. But if you don’t want to read all that, we can cut right to the point here, with my top recommendations for the best printers for Cricut printing.

What is a Cricut?

A Cricut is a cutting machine designed for crafters, DIYers and artists. Basically, it is a desktop or tabletop machine that looks a bit like a printer, but instead of a print head it has a very sharp knife (or other tools). A Cricut connects to your computer, using cables or wirelessly, and comes with software that allows you to effortlessly cut out your designs.

Cricut cutting machines cut those designs out of paper, fabric, card stock, vinyl, pre-printed stickers and sticker paper or other materials, precisely following the shape, design or illustration you have loaded or created on the software.

And for the very best possible results, you can get one of the best printers for Cricut printing, which will let you make a beautiful printout on those various materials, and then use the Cricut to cut them out with great precision and perfect neatness and finish.

Cricut isn’t the only company that makes cutting machines, but they definitely make the very best, easiest to use and most reliable ones. But don’t take my word for it – just ask literally any crafter or artist who has ever used one!

So before we move on to the best printers for Cricut, let’s mention again the three brand new Cricut, all of which are – based on my own (so far) somewhat limited experience with them and everything I’ve heard and on stellar customer reviews all around the web – even better than the earlier Cricut models!

  1. Cricut Maker 3 Deluxe Arts and Crafts Cutting Machine
  2. Cricut Maker 3 Deluxe Arts and Crafts Cutting Machine

While they’re all great machines, the Cricut Maker 3 is by far the best, and my strongest recommendation – in addition to having more capability, it is a much stronger, essentially commercial grade machine that will last a lifetime.

I think they all will last and last, actually, and are all really over-built and high quality machines, but if you plan on using your new Cricut machine a lot, and especially if you don’t want to be limited to thinner or lighter materials, the Maker 3 is for sure the best choice – and not that much more expensive!

Why Do You Need a Printer for Your Cricut?

I guess you don’t really “need” a printer – you could just create shapes and designs on your computer and then cut them out of plain, patterned or pre-printed materials.

But using a Cricut with a good printer is really the standard method, opening up so many possibilities and making so many more ideas and inspirations not just possible but actually quick and easy to realize.

Because with a printer you can use pretty much any art, drawing, painting or photo software, on any platform – Windows, Apple, Android – to make your own artwork, designs, patterns, pictures, words and lettering, layouts, borders and decorations, photos, really anything. Then you print it out and use your Cricut to cut out the printed material exactly and beautifully.

If your original design is in a particular shape – like an oval, a heart, a box, even very complex or irregular shapes – you can easily transfer that original design image to the Cricut software and it will cut your printout perfectly every single time. I’m pretty good with scissors, but I can’t even  come close to what you can achieve with a Cricut and a good printer in combination!

And these are just the basics. With more experience and more confidence, you can begin to really experiment and allow your art and craft vision to take off, with special techniques that might, for example, print art or designs onto a piece of material and then use your Cricut to score, emboss, texture or selectively cut out pieces from that printed material

And if you get one of the best printers for Cricut, you can do this on a huge range of materials, with stunning quality. So, having the best Cricut machine, and the best Cricut printer, lets you very successfully make:

Or the short list – with a Cricut and the right printer you can:

What Should You Look For in the Best Cricut Printer?

One of the most beautiful things about the Cricut cutting machines is how they open up possibilities and inspire new and creative ideas.

Really, especially with the Cricut Maker (but really with any Cricut machine), you can work with so many different materials in so many different ways, and it is a good idea to have a printer that won’t limit you, that won’t frustrate your creativity and new ideas.

So if we are going to look for the best printers for using with Cricut, we should only consider printers that think like the Cricut thinks, printers that can use the same wide range of materials, print the same oversized pieces, and basically stay up with your Cricut every step of the way.

One question I hear a lot is whether laser printers or a dot matrix printers are better (for Cricut or for lots of other applications and uses), and in this case I would definitely stick with dot matrix printers, for ease of use, quality versus cost and – really specifically with the Cricut – the ability to work with different weights and kinds of paper and material.

And, of course, we only want to consider printers that have really beautiful printing quality, are well made and reliable, and offer exceptional value at any price point.

To be more clear, the most important things to look for in a good printer to use with Cricut cutting machines are:

It shouldn’t go without saying that these printers, which offer maximum flexibility and capability, the most beautiful printing quality and the highest levels of build quality and reliability, are not just the best printers for Cricut, but the best printers as well for anything else your creative heart may desire – arts, crafts, gifts and products of any kind.

How Can You Find the Best Printer for Cricut?

It seems, as far as I can tell, that the Cricut company doesn’t recommend any specific printers, so I’m afraid we’re all on our own! But say calm and keep reading – after all, that’s what this is all about: finding the best printer for your Cricut machine, whether you get one of the brand new Cricuts we looked at above, or have had the same old first-generation Cricut for years and are still happily using it every day.

The good news is that not only are there quite a few really great printers to use with your Cricut (and, again, to use for everything else), they are available at all different price levels, and some can be quite inexpensive!

So, since we are looking at printers that I’ve specifically selected to be as versatile as possible – that is, to be as versatile as the Cricut are – we can simply list our results by price – from the least to the most expensive – and make it easier for you to find the best cricut printer for your particular budget.

Whichever level you land on, you can be assured that you’ll get the best printer for using with any Cricut machine and the best printer for any art, craft, design or general use – beautiful prints, lots of capability and long term reliability.

At the end of this article, in the Bonus section, we will talk about a very specific form of printing – sublimation printing – which is very special and yields such beautiful (and, it should be said, highly sellable) items, and seems tailor made for the Cricut. You really need a separate printer that you use only for sublimation, and so we’ll consider a few great choices.

But again, our main section will focus on printers that you can use for everything else – really, everything else! – and that are a prefect match for any Crictut.

Whether you are making beautiful things for yourself, for friends and loved ones, or to sell in a shop or online, you should make sure to get the right printer for the job, and that’s just what you’ll find here, in this buyer’s guide to the best printers for use with Cricut cutting machines!

All the printers included in this buyer’s guide for the best Cricut printers are wonderful, and honestly I would be thrilled to have and use any of them – with my Cricut or for any other project or purpose.

But there is one particular printer which really stands out in my mind, and has ever since I began using it. It is definitely one of my favorite printers ever, and is especially great for use in any kind of Cricut project – the Canon Pixma Pro-200 professional color printer.

I’m not even sure why I love this Canon Pixma printer so much, but I guess it is just because it is simple, easy to use, basic, incredibly dependable and compact printer, which makes astonishingly beautiful prints, and is a solid, quiet, stable product in every way, with a delightfully premium fit and finish and real long-term reliability.

Ok, I guess I am sure why I love it so much, but I am definitely not the only one. The Pro-200 has become a bit of a legendary printer, especially because of its super-high print quality – accurate, deeply saturated colors, ultra-high resolution, detail and depth, utilizing Google cloud print and Pixma printing solutions – at a price that, while not exactly bargain basement, is almost inexplicably cheap.

A very high quality printer in every way, truly commercial grade in material and build quality and printed output, the Canon Pixma Pro-200 wide format printer is a joy to own and to use, the obvious choice for my favorite printer to use with a Cricut cutting machine, and receives my strongest recommendation!

Let’s get this out of the way right now – this is not, I know, the least expensive affordable printer ever recommended.

It is, in fact, a couple of hundred dollars more expensive than some pretty great printers, like the also highly recommendable Canon Pixma TR4520, but for a still low, even opening-level price, with the Canon IP8720 you are really on a different level in terms of print quality, versatility, build quality and reliability among the inkjet printers.

A well designed and incredibly easy printer to use, with a full range of connectivity (including full AirPrint compatibility, this printer has lots going for it, but just the ability to work with card stock and other heavy papers and materials, and the wide-format printing capability (up to 13 inches width – the same as most Cricuts) make this a wonderful printer to use with Cricut.

And when you factor in the startlingly good print quality (with incredibly high resolution and a full 6 color ink system – really unheard of at this level!) the IP8720 becomes the clear choice in this price range.

An easy to use printer, well designed and well made, the Canon IP8720 is a great affordable match for any Cricut machine – in terms of quality, versatility and the inspiration they bring – and is my recommendation for best budget printer for Cricut on the market today.

Although the Epson SureColor inkjet printer line of premium high resolution printers is becoming more and more well known, and more and more loved, among commercial and fine artists, designers and photographers everywhere (it handles photo paper very well), the less expensive P700 remains a bit of an unknown gem – a printer which shares the engineering approach and quality of its pricier siblings and offers a genuine bargain, even at its slightly higher than mid-level price.

The Epson SureColor P700 is also a fantastic choice for Cricut users. It has the same 13 inch width of most Cricuts, and can work with card stock and other thicker materials, so you won’t be frustrated or held back by a printer that won’t quite keep up with the Cricut. If you can envision it, you can do it!

And since most of my audience are pretty serious and discerning artists and crafters, and many of us like the idea of not just being able to create the most beautiful and highest quality items, but also being able to sell them, the P700 becomes an even better choice – it has, after all, absolutely stunning print quality!

The UltraChrome ink and ink cartridges, professional quality print heads and extreme precision engineering and manufacturing lead to new levels of color accuracy, range and saturation, incredible sharpness and depth, and long-term reliability and consistency that lesser printers cannot come close to.

And yet, for a basically professional quality wide format printer, the Epson SureColor P700 is remarkably easy to use, and surprisingly cheap to run. It has a wide range of connectivity options, including AirPrint, is a nice, intelligent design all around. A great choice for any artist, crafter or photographer at any level, the P700 is my choice for best medium priced printer for Cricut on the market today, and one of the great values on the market today.

One of the most exciting and attractive things about the Cricut machines is the exceptionally high level of precision, control and quality they allow.

If you really want to make the most beautiful and highest quality items, and items that – if you are thinking commercially – will blow customers away and achieve really premium level prices, Cricut – and especially the Cricut Maker 3 – is the answer.

For this level of quality and beauty, and for the most discerning artists and crafters (not to mention the most discerning customers, if again that’s your bag), there is no better choice than the Epson Artisan 1430 wide format printer.

This Epson Artisan is not a cheap printer (that is, in fact, not a word you will ever, ever associate with this beautiful machine) but there are certainly other options out there which can cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars more, and Epson Artisan performs better than a lot of them – maybe most of them!

The Artisan 1430 is designed to be a premium photo printer, and it is indeed a top choice for even the highest level professional and art photographers, but it is also a favorite among commercial artists, designers and illustrators, the most discerning crafters and all kinds of creative people who want the best of the best.

The print quality is simply stunning, with the superb 6 color Claria inks, incredibly high resolution MicroPiezo print heads and exceptionally precise registration, borderless prints and the images you can create, cut, trimmed and even specially finished on a Cricut, will really be on another level of appearance and impact.

The Epson Artisan 1430 wide format professional printer is ideal for our purposes in every other way as well – printing up to 13 inches in width, capability to run heavier stock and other materials, easy but powerful user interface, including AirPrint wireless connectivity – and is a truly commercial level printer in terms of material quality, reliability and life. But mostly it is a printer that makes astonishingly beautiful images, and is an easy choice for the best premium Cricut worthy printer.

Epson EcoTank Pro ET-16650 Wide-Format Printer with Scanner

An easy choice for best printer for small or medium sized businesses, the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-16650 is one of my favorite printers and one I recommend quite often.

It is not an inexpensive printer, for sure, but is a real money saver over time (saves on ink costs), and offers uncompromising print quality and a ton of other useful functionality.

The ET-16650 is a full featured all-in-one, with a beautiful high resolution printer, copier and scanner, and has the Epson EcoTank ink system, using refillable large capacity ink tank system that drastically cut running costs and allow you to go a lot longer without having to worry about replacing the ink.

It is also a heavy, durable, over-built printer that can easily withstand more heavy commercial use, and should – in a home or office – provide years of reliable service.

Bu8t mostly this printer, talented as it is in so many ways, is about print quality, and has very high resolution (indeed, much sharper and higher detail than the specs may indicate, thanks to the exceptional print heads and exacting alignment) and vibrant DURABrite pigment inks. Really beautiful, bright and energetic prints!

If you want to make the best prints, for Cricut or for any other reason, and also want to scan them (or digitize your other artwork, scan and copy documents, do inexpensive, first-quality normal printing, and about a thousand other daily tasks, and want a reliable, commercial grade printer that will always work and is cheap and easy to use, the Epson EcoTank ET-16650 wide format printer is a great choice, and is my clear choice for best commercial quality printer for Cricut cutting machines on the market today.

For around the same money as our budget pick, this Canon G7020 all in one printer is one a very different level, if with similarly beautiful printing.

The G7020 is a printer, scanner and copier, with a maximum print width of 11 inches. So while it doesn’t offer the same wide printing as the IP8720 above (or, for that matter, most of the Cricut machines), it may be a better choice for an all around general printer for home or office.

It should also be said that this printer does not have quite the amazing print resolution or color quality as our first choice, but it does make much better looking prints than most other printers in this price range, and with the supertank ink system it does so at much lower overall printing and ink costs.

An amazingly versatile and high quality printer, copier and scanner with auto document feeder, with great print quality, well designed and overbuilt, and with its big refillable ink tank system quite cheap to run, the Canon G7020 all in one printer is a great choice for any artist or crafter, and the perfect choice for best supertank printer for Cricut on the market today.
