Guide to Candle Making Classes Near You and Online
More and more people are discovering that arts and crafts, and all kinds of creative hobbies, are not just fun and rewarding, they can be incredibly calming and relaxing as well, and a great way to spend your time off.
For my money, there is probably no creative hobby more relaxing and soothing than making candles – not just the process itself, but the beautiful candles you make, as they slowly burn, flicker and glow, and maybe even gradually release the scent of beautifully balancing and centering essential oil into your space.
And while candle bars and candle making classes are absolutely huge right now, there is something especially nice about making candles in your own home, in your own time and in your own way – as much of a lovely ritual as burning them can be. And there are so many really nice candle making kits you can get, which make the craft easy and can help you produce really beautiful candles.
I’ve been on a bit of a candle-making kick lately, and have checked out lots of different kits, and so, to make the whole venture even more relaxing for you, and lead you to the best and purchase and the best candles, I’ve narrowed the huge selection of products currently available down to a half dozen of the very best candle making kits you can buy.
What Do You Need to Make Your Own Candles?
What supplies will the best DIY candle making kit include?
Often in these buyer’s guides I spend a little time writing out a brief tutorial on the craft in question, or at least some tips and hints on how to make the process easier or more successful. But honestly, with candle making, the process is really simple – in fact, that’s one of the key reasons it is so relaxing and enjoyable, and probably why it is such a popular activity these days.
So instead, in this article on the best candle making kits, let’s focus instead on what exactly you will need to make candles in your own home – or, more to the point:
What Exactly Should the Best Candle Making Kits Include?
The main things you should look for in a good, complete candle making kit are:
- Wax – probably don’t need to explain this one!
- A Melting Pot – a nice metal or glass pot that is safe to heat and safe to hold
- Wicks – also pretty obvious
- Wick Dots – little adhesive dots that keep the wick secured at the bottom of your container
- Wick Holders – popsicle sticks or, better yet, bow tie clips, that hold the wick at the top, keeping it straight and centered
And some very nice extras which, while not necessary, are so good to have:
- Thermometer – to monitor the temperature of your wax. I could as easily put this above, in the list of must-have items
- Scented Essential Oils – just a touch, to keep the candle smelling good when it burns, and even scents for calming, centering, energizing, clarifying or other wonderful effects
- Wax Dyes – often in blocks or chips, which can add a splash of color to your candle
- Containers – of course you can use lots of different containers – glasses, jars, flower pots, cans or tins and more, but it’s nice when the kit includes a few
Which is Better: Soy Wax, Beeswax, or Paraffin?
What is the best kind of wax for making candles?
What are the best – soy candles or beeswax candles?
Which wax do the best candle making kits include?
Why is a soy candle making kit better?
You may not even know that you have a choice, but amongst candle makers there is actually quite a bit of discussion about which kind of wax is better.
Soy Wax – Widely considered the best, because it comes from a renewable resource (soy beans), raises no questions about animal products (vegans, and others, oppose the use of beeswax), and burns slower and cleaner than paraffin. Some people are allergic to soy candles, though.
Beeswax – More environmentally friendly than paraffin, beeswax is the most dense and slowest burning kind of wax for candle making, though may raise some questions about animal exploitation, since the honeycomb is removed from the beehive.
Paraffin – Paraffin burns hotter than other kinds of wax, meaning your candles won’t last as long, but they will more effectively release essential oils or other scents. Paraffin may have its own scent, though, and release smoke and toxins, and is very seldom found in the best candle making kits.
Most of my recommendations are for a soy candle making kit, and I will also include my favorite beeswax kit, but because of a potential health concerns I won’t include any paraffin kits.

I’m going right back to Hearth and Harbor as my choice for best premium candle making set, with their deluxe set, which includes a wonderful electric pot with touch controls.
Like with my favorite candle making kit above, all of this kit’s items are top quality, and seem really made to last. They are all also a real pleasure to use – with some cheaper or lower quality sets you may not fully trust the pouring pot, or the wax may not melt nicely (or sometimes even cleanly!), or the scents smell chemically and unhealthy, or things just don’t feel good or nice, but with every H&H kit I’ve used it is always exactly the opposite.
And with this complete candle making set there’s that really nice electric pot, which makes everything even easier (there’s also a normal stove-heated metal pot), and like my favorite kit, just above, this one also comes with ten extra pounds of clean, pure soy wax and lots of extra wicks and glue dots, so you can pour candles to your heart’s content.
No doubt about it – Hearth and Harbor make great candle making packages, and this big set, while not even that expensive, is definitely the best overall candle making kit I’ve ever used, and very highly recommended.

I’ve tried a lot of different ones, and this Hearth and Harbor kit is my favorite DIY kit for making candles – I like using it the most, and I like the candles it makes.
I’m not even sure if I can say why I like it so much, but I can say that it is a very complete set, and the individual components seem top quality. The aromatic oils have a lovely scent, the colors of the wax dyes are vivid and beautiful, the thermometer feels heavier and more solid than most, as do the pouring pot, the candle tins and pretty much everything else.
The wax itself, which is natural soy wax, seems very pure and clean, and it melts and burns beautifully, and there is a lot of it. Yes, maybe that is one of the reasons I like this kit – it lets me make really special, high quality candles, and with the extra 10 pound bag of wax, a hundred extra wicks and a hundred extra glue dots that are included I can make as many as I want without holding back.
Whatever the reason, this Hearth and Harbor kit is one of the best candle making sets I have found, and my favorite. It is a really great value and a real pleasure to use.

Two things really struck me when using this Craftbud candle making kit:
- It is one of the most complete kits I’ve ever seen, with not just good, clean soy wax, wicks and stays, but also great fragrance oils, 16 different dye colors, a thermometer, a trivet, and even finger protectors – and a lot more!
- The colors are really vibrant and glowingly beautiful.
Everything else is in place for this to qualify for our list of best kits for making your own candles at home – pure, natural wax, natural, clean-burning wicks, clear and simple instructions, a high quality, safe melting pot and more, and you really do have a complete candle-making setup here, designed to be easy, safe and convenient, and to make the best candles possible.
Somewhat ironically, my choice for most complete candle making kit only comes with enough wicks and glue dots for four candles, but you can get good quality and cheap bulk sets, like my favorite: ECTY 300 Smokeless Cotton Candle Wicks with Stickers, and create candles till the cows come home.
Still, I have no question that this Craftbud set is the best choice for the most complete candle-making kit, and gets an even stronger nod for the quality of its colored dyes.

If you prefer a natural beeswax candle, for its hypoallergenic properties, its purity and slow-burning beauty, or for any other reason, this Haccah set is a great choice, and the best affordable beeswax candle making kit I’ve found.
Everything in this kit impresses me with its high quality – not just the wonderfully pure and clean beeswax, but the metal hot wax pouring jug and spoon, the nice digital thermometer, the light but strong scent oils, beautiful color dyes, even the candle tins.
The kit is designed to be as easy as possible to use, and this, in combination with the quality of the supplies, makes it appealing to both total beginners and more experienced candle makers. It’s very nicely packaged as well, and makes a great present, or just a nice thing to send to yourself and then excitedly open when it arrives!
If there’s any downside, it’s that there is not a ton of wax. Actually, not even a pound of wax – enough for a few candles, and that’s it. But since there are so many wicks and glue dots, you can simply get a big package of premium beeswax and keep going. I really like Howemon White Beeswax Pellets in the 2 pound bag.
This Haccah set is a great package then, quite high quality for a really affordable price, and my choice for the best beeswax candle making kit on the market today.

- 12 Glue Dots

- 10 Tea Light Tins

The best candle making set that I’ve found for scented candles is also one of the nicest overall – the DIY Gifts 49 piece candle making kit.
Full disclosure – this set only comes with three essential oils – lavender, cedarwood and lemongrass – but they are far, far nicer than the aromatic oils you get with so many other sets. All of the kits I’ve included in this candle making buyer’s guide have, in fact, very clean and natural oils, but some of the scents included with other sets are awful – instant headache!
But not with this set. The plain, undecorated little bottles hold really pure, premium grade essential oils, which are strong, subtle and clean in scent. All of the other supplies in this package is premium quality as well, and it’s all made in the United States.
Even the package itself is really nice looking, and these kits would make wonderful gifts for somebody you love – including yourself! This DIY Kits set is the best candle making kit I know based on the quality of the fragrances, and is highly recommended on all levels.
And once you have a scent of how nice real essential oils are in candles, you might want to get a small set of different scents – one of my favorites, for a reasonable price, is the Cliganic USDA Organic Oils Top 8 Gift Set.

A wonderful, and wonderfully complete, kit for a low price, this YRYM candle making set is not particularly noteworthy in what it includes – in fact, lots of even less expensive sets have this much stuff or more – but it’s pretty amazing for the quality of the wax, the essential oils and the dyes, which all are much, much nicer than what you find in most other kits at this level.
With lots of supplies, including over two pounds of clean, natural soy wax that will burn beautifully, and plenty of coloring and scents, you can make candles to your heart’s content, and be sure that they are all as healthy and high quality as you could possibly hope for. That also makes this kit an especially good gift for friends or family – or at least the candles you’ll make.
A great, inexpensive product of surprisingly high quality, the YRYM set is my choice as the best mid-priced candle making kit on the market today.
Best Affordable Candle Making Kit
Best Cheap Candle Making Kit
Soy Wax DIY Candle Craft Tools Including Candle Make Pouring Pot, Candle Wicks, Wicks Sticker, 3-Hole Candle Wicks Holder, Natural Soy Wax and Spoon
Kit Includes:
- 350 Grams Soy Wax
- Stainless Steel Melting Pot
- Stainless Steel Stirring Spoon
- 50 Wicks
- 50 Strong Adhesive Dots
- 2 Bow Tie Centering Clips
This Dingpai starter set is a very basic kit, designed for making candles without colors or scents, but includes plenty of very high quality natural soy wax and a very nice melting pot and spoon, as well as everything else you need. The wax is very pure, as are the wicks, so you can make beautiful and clean-burning soy candles every time.
A much, much better choice than similarly priced sets which have inferior wax or wicks, and/or lots of colors and fragrance oils which are often of dubious purity or safety, and an easy choice for best budget candle making kit on the market today.
Bonus: Can You Make Money Making Candles?
As with almost any creative hobby out there, people really wonder if they can sell their beautiful homemade candles, and actually make money doing something they enjoy so much. I get asked about this, and you see Google popping up with lots of questions too, like:
Do handmade candles sell well?
Is candle making profitable?
Is it possible to make money selling my candles?
Where is the best place to sell my candles – online, or in shops?
How much should I sell my custom candles for?
Should I quit my day job?
Well, not yet – that is, the day job thing. Don’t quit yet…
It is definitely possible to sell nice custom made candles online, or in local shops, and if it is really something you’d like to pursue you might want to check out our Art Side of Life article on just how to proceed:
Make Money Crafting! A Guide to Selling Your Art & Crafts Locally
But with candles, just like anything else I guess, you kind of need to stand out. There will be a gazillion people selling candles on Etsy or Amazon Handmade, and lots of those candles will be pretty much the same as the others.
How to Make Your Candles Stand Out!
The ones that sell, though, offer something special. For example, you can try:
- Unique custom candle shapes – carved by hand or poured into special molds
- Beautiful custom colors – nice swirls, layers and combinations, or a special mixed color that becomes your trademark
- Fragrances – either special scent combinations, your own custom fragrant oils, or even specializing in aromatherapy or other healthful or therapeutic scents
- Cool stuff in the candles – you have to be a little careful what you put into a candle that is going to burn down, but lots of very special gift candles might reveal beautiful charms, sea shells, polished stones or modest semi-precious gemstones or other interesting and beautiful objects
So yeah, you can make money selling candles, but to make sure that they really get noticed online, or that your candles seem different and interesting to the proprietor and customers of the local gift, craft or coffee shop, you probably want to make sure they really are stand-out items, different and interesting.
