Best Desktop Ring Lights

Get it on Amazon

A superbly made and perfectly designed desktop ring light kit from one of the most respected names in lighting.

Specifically designed for online content creators, YouTube, video conferencing, telecommuting, homeschooling, and similar desk-based video use, the Rotolight is simple and easy to use and includes a stable desktop tripod and four color filters for light color temperature ranging from cool to full daylight.

Nothing fancy, just nicely even, flattering light, an intelligent, stable, and durable design – and much better quality overall than other ring lights at this price level!

Desktop
Evershop Dual 8" Computer Selfie Ring Light

Dual 8-Inch Desktop Ring Lights :: Flexible Stands for Lights and Smartphone :: Separate Controllers for Each Light :: Adjustable Brightness and Color Temperature

Get it on Amazon

While not substantially less than the Rotolight above, the Evershop dual ring light is a great budget choice nonetheless – and, to be honest, so many of the cheaper desktop ring lights aren’t worth considering.

An affordable setup and a great value, the Evershop desktop 8-inch LED ring light offers two separate lights for even more effective lighting and is surprisingly high quality – both in terms of the lighting itself and overall material and build quality – for a very low price.

With three warmth settings and ten brightness levels for each lamp, this Evershop ring light gives you a lot of control and options and is a great inexpensive choice for content creators, telecommuters or students.

Best Small Ring Lights

Desktop
LimoStudio 8 Inch Ring Light with Stand, Mirror and Portable Tripod

7.7 Inch Desktop Ring Light :: Separate Light Stand and Tripod for Camera/Phone :: 5500K Color Temperature :: 2 Sided Mirror :: Soft Carrying Case

Get it on Amazon

There are a lot of really cheap small LED ring lights these days, but by spending a little more, you can get something that is much better quality and offers better, moves even, and neutral lighting — and this LimoStudio 8-inch LED ring light is the best example I’ve found.

A basic, professional quality desktop ring lamp, the LimoStudio has an ideal 5500K light temperature and includes a handy two-sided mirror and a solid and easily adjustable stand. And it even comes with a premium quality mini-tripod for your camera or phone.

No fancy features or adjustments, just the best light quality and material quality in a very usable package that, while slightly more expensive, offers truly professional results.

Portable
UBeesize 10 Inch Selfie Ring Light and Stand

10” Ring Light :: Tripod Stand with Phone Holder :: 3 Color Temperatures (3000K, 4500K, 6000K) :: Inline Light Controller :: Wireless Shutter Button :: Aluminum Construction

Get it on Amazon

For quite a bit less money than the LimoStudio above, you can get a similarly high-quality light in the UBeesize 10″ selfie ring light.

Even though it’s cheaper, this great light has a larger 10-inch head, three color temperatures, a nice wireless shutter button, and a well-made aluminum light stand.

Ultimately the LimoStudio above, for around twenty dollars more, might have slightly more even and natural lighting, but maybe more to the point, this UBeesize 10-inch has a light that is far more natural, bright, stable, and attractive than anything else I’ve found in this price range.

It’s no wonder that UBeesize is becoming so popular! They offer great value and performance, and this inexpensive ring light is a remarkable product for the money.

Best Medium-Sized Ring Lights

Portable
UBeesize 12’’ Ring Light with Tripod

12” Selfie Ring Light :: 67’’ Adjustable Tripod Stand :: Center Mount for Smartphone :: 5 Color Temperatures :: 10 Brightness Levels :: Remote Shutter Control

Get it on Amazon

In the medium-sized range, the best overall LED ring light I’ve found is made by UBeesize, a company that’s becoming well-known for brilliantly designed and well-made products of all types.

Their 12-inch ring light has many different lighting settings, including warmth, mode, and brightness.

It is a fully adjustable tripod, and the remote is a two-in-one unit, controlling the light and your phone/camera.

A nice looking and premium quality LED ring light for a surprisingly reasonable price and a great addition to our list of the best ring lights.

Portable
Saveyour 12 Inch Ring Light with Stand & Remote

12” Selfie Ring Light :: 51" Adjustable Tripod Stand / Selfie Stick :: Adjustable Brightness & Color Temperature :: Light Remote & Shutter Remote :: Aluminum Alloy Stand

Get it on Amazon

An inexpensive but highly sophisticated light ring, the Saveyour 12-inch has a very stable stand and very even, flicker-free lighting for professional and highly consistent results.

And while I would always opt for light quality over features and tech, the Saveyour somehow has both, with fully adjustable light temperature and brightness, a great remote, and a separate shutter remote (Android and Apple compatible).

This is a well-made and well-designed light, as is the stand, and it is one of the best values I’ve found.

Best Large Ring Lights

My Pick
Westcott 18” Bi-Color LED Ring Light Kit

18 Inch LED Ring Light :: Professional Level Lighting :: AC Adaptor and Rechargeable Batteries :: Continuously Variable Color Temperature & Brightness :: Complete Kit incl. Carrying Case

Get it on Amazon

This 18-inch LED ring light is in a different class from anything else in my guide for the best ring lights today.

There is a quality to the light that seems more like it’s coming from an ultra-expensive commercial lighting setup – stable, clean and clear, and with great and precise controllability. But then Westcott has been the choice of professional photographers and videographers for years.

Even still, their big ring light kit, which is incredible in what it includes — a super-strong tripod with camera and phone mounts, both AC and battery power (with two rechargeable batteries), a nice travel bag, and more — the Westcott 18 inch ring light is much less expensive than you might expect.

It gets my highest recommendation for any type or level of use.

Large
Ivisii 18 Inch Ring Light, Bluetooth, Remote, Stand, Case

18 Inch Ring Light :: Aluminum Light Stand :: Full Function Remote :: Bluetooth Phone Remote :: Phone and Camera Stands :: Adjustable Temperatures (3000-5800 Kelvin) :: Carrying Case

Get it on Amazon

The 19-inch Ivisii dimmable ring light certainly ticks all the boxes, with a wide range of light modes, an incredible and easy-to-use LCD control panel, a full-featured remote control, Bluetooth connectivity, a great array of mounting hardware and accessories, and a rock-solid stand.

But the Ivisii is all about the light.

With beautiful, perfectly even, and stable illumination, adjustable from a warm 3000K to a cool and neutral 5500K, this is easily the best budget ring light for anybody who wants and needs truly professional results.

You can get a big ring light for a lower price, for sure, and if you don’t mind a little flickering or shifting when you’re streaming or recording, they aren’t half bad – but ring lights are meant to make you look better, and for that, the Ivisii is the best choice, and a great bargain.

What Exactly is a Ring Light?

This is a short primer for newbies who want to get the most out of their new ring light!

If you’ve ever seen a mirror in a dressing room or one of those small makeup mirrors with a circle of light around the mirror itself, you already have the idea.

A ring light is, as the name indicates, a ring of light, either a curved single light or multiple individual bulbs, designed to provide light for videos, photography, or other purposes.

Instead of surrounding a mirror, a ring light is open in the center, with room for a video or still camera, and often has a mount to affix the camera for more controllable and consistent results and ease of use.

The best ring lights also usually have controls for adjusting the brightness of the light and often also allow you to change the light color temperature from cooler to warmer.

The ring light is quite simple, but it works brilliantly, giving a clear and even light to your face or all across the scene that you are videoing, shooting, or filming.

It also gives a warm glow to surfaces and a sense of life and animation to faces, not to mention that characteristic halo “catch light” you often see in people’s eyes when a ring light illuminates them.

What Are Ring Lights Used For?

Ring lights are very popular these days, and it is easy to understand why. They offer an affordable and very effective way to get attractive, professionally-looking lighting for videos — they are huge among YouTubers and TikTokers — and are also great for many other uses.

In fact, with the enormous rise of telecommuting, working from home, and even homeschooling, they are becoming increasingly popular.

But especially for content creators – whether you are looking to monetize content, increase viewership, have an eye on becoming a real influencer or simply want your videos or images to look as good and as professional as possible – a good quality ring light can make a huge difference!

Common and not-so-common uses include:

There are so many other uses, and people with even one good ring light end up using it way more than they would have imagined or expected.

Main Criteria for Choosing a Ring Light

Considering all the things you can use a good ring light for and also thinking about how huge content creation is (not to mention telecommuting and homeschooling), it’s no wonder so many people are clambering to get one.

But how can you ensure you get the best ring light for you and your needs and usage?

Here are some of the most common and important features, functions, and considerations in selecting your next ring light:

Size

If you are always shooting from your desk, pretty close up (head and shoulders), or if you want a good portable ring light, a smaller unit is fine, but if you are doing a variety of shots, you might want to get a bigger one – which can still work beautifully with close shots.

And if you are using a DSLR or any larger camera, it can be quite awkward or even impossible to get to work with a smaller ring light.

Adjustable light

Many ring lights have different light color temperatures – either three or more settings – cool, neutral and warm – or continuously variable, as well as adjustable brightness.

This can give you a lot of flexibility, although with temperature, in particular, most people end up using a neutral temperature of around 5,500 Kelvin for the most natural light.

All of my recommendations but one have an adjustable color temperature (and that one has that ideal color temperature of 5,500K), and all have adjustable brightness.

Stability of Light and The Stand

This means two things that lead to consistent and professional results.

Light stability means you will never experience flickering, shifts of color, or intensity when you’re recording, and it is an absolute must.

The stability of the stand means that you can precisely adjust your light, camera, phone, and other items – and they will stay right there without any unwanted movement, weird swaying shadows, or other surprises.

Other features and goodies

It’s nice to have a great remote or a nice, clear, and usable control panel – or both – and a remote shutter button and some ring lights will come with other goodies like a carrying case, a mirror, a couple of different brackets (for a phone and a camera), rechargeable batteries, etc.

But at the end of the day, there is nothing more important than that stability bit – high-quality light and a high-quality stand are all you need.

All of my choices have some or all of these features and functions, and I will let you know about them as we go along, but you can be sure that all of them will be stable and reliable and will always make you look great!

How Can You Find the Best Ring Light for You?

Based on my experience and feedback from other artists and content creators, friends, colleagues, and students, I have made a list of what I think are the best ring lights today.

This list is broken into four categories, with the best overall and best budget choice:

How to Get the Most from Your New Ring Light

Once you get your new ring light, you can find many videos and online guides about setting it up and using it, but I still wanted to offer at least a few basic tips for getting the best results and having the most fun from your new ring light.

Avoid the Halo

One of the most distinctive things about ring lights – and a sure sign somebody is using one – is the ring-shaped catch light, or halo, reflected in their eyes.

This was super-cool initially but is actually a bit cliché and unprofessional now, and you might want to consider avoiding it.

You can easily get the same rich and animated lighting and avoid the halo by setting your camera/phone and ring light at different angles – close enough to get full, even lighting, but set apart enough to prevent a direct reflection.

Use Multiple Lights

A ring light provides such even and complete lighting that many people don’t even think of using supplemental lighting – and mostly, you don’t need to – but it is still nice to experiment with fill lights, background lighting, different colors, and other multi-light setups.

Ring Lights are Not for Everything

Again, ring lights give such consistently full and even lighting that people end up using them for pretty much everything. And while they are pretty versatile, most ring lights are not always good for larger shots, very flat subjects (like documents or artwork), moving subjects, or more distant, complex, or busy scenes.

Quality for Quality

I have intentionally given a few different price points for each size light in this buyer’s guide to the best ring lights, but it is always best to get the best you can afford and even stretch your budget a wee bit if possible.

Not only will you have a more reliable product, which you can use even more heavily for many years, but the light will typically be more stable and even and give better results.

Larger is Better

A small ring light on a tabletop stand is probably all you’ll need if you do nothing but a simple desktop setup for video streaming, like Twitch, Discord or teleconferencing.

But if you are doing different shots and scenes, longer distances, product or still-life shots, or other things besides the most basic head and shoulder framing, a larger ring light – even in the 18-inch range – will be more versatile and provide better results.

And they will look better even for simple close shots and static frames.

Play Around and Experiment

We creative types can have so much fun with a nice ring light – it can be used for video streaming, sure, and simple photographs and other videos, but a ring light can also be made more colorful, be a part of a multi-light setup, be used at crazy angles, as back-lighting or even moving for all kinds of cool effects, and can even be made a part of a scene – behind translucent material, for example, or peeking out from behind an object and creating a kind of aura.

Have fun, and the results will follow!

I hope my guide helped you to get your new ring light, and you will have a lot of fun recording and streaming.
