Best iPad for Procreate DREAMS in 2024

Hi there! Welcome to my post, where I’ll give you an overview of the best iPad for Procreate Dreams.

Procreate Dreams animation app was released to the public in the past week, and I was really excited to dive in and add life to my illustrations with these cute little animations (spoiler alert – new class is coming out soon!!)

I am using the iPad Pro 12.9″, and my experience animating in the app is very smooth and enjoyable. So this is naturally the iPad for Procreate Dreams I recommend to anyone who wants to have a similar experience.

However, what if you have a different iPad or your budget doesn’t allow you to get the iPad Pro model? So, let’s find out which iPads I think are the best for Procreate Dreams and what you should look out for when deciding.

iPadOS Requirements

Photo: Iva animating in Procreate Dreams - ©Art Side of Life

As I explained in my post about Procreate Dreams supported devices, the Procreate Dreams app requires iPadOS 16+ or iPadOS 17+, with the latter being the better choice.

So, if your iPad runs either iPadOS 16+ or iPadOS 17+, you can install and use Procreate Dreams.

Working Memory (RAM)

Photo: Live filters in Procreate Dreams - ©Art Side of Life

💡 To keep things simple, the rule of thumb is more RAM equals more content and video tracks.

In my post about how many layers you can have in Procreate, I explained why RAM, also known as the working memory, is important for layer limits in Procreate.

Considering that Procreate Dreams is an animation app, the RAM plays an even bigger role and determines how many content tracks and video tracks you will be able to use.

On my website, under Procreate equipment, you will be able to find RAM and Procreate layers limits for the selection of iPad models. In my post about Procreate Dreams iPad compatibility you will find how many content and video tracks each supported iPad provides.

If you are just a beginner, you will do fine with models such as iPad 9, iPad 10, and iPad Mini, which have 4GB of RAM. If you are an advanced or professional animator, I would aim for a minimum of 8GB (iPad Air 5, iPad Pro models with below 1TB storage) and 16GB of RAM (iPad Pro models with 1TB and 2TB storage).

Storage

Photo: Procreate Dreams Size and Storage requirements - ©Art Side of Life

I think storage is something where it gets a bit tricky with Procreate Dreams.

💡 I wouldn’t get an iPad with storage lower than 256GB at minimum for beginners. Optimal storage for advanced and professional animators would be 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB.

I am genuinely concerned about the performance of Procreate Dreams on iPads with lower storage capacities (such as 32GB and 64GB).

I mean, this is the nature of animation and drawing apps like Procreate Dreams. They tend to generate large files, especially when dealing with high-resolution images and multiple layers. This results in substantial consumption of storage space.

Consequently, iPads that have less storage might find it challenging to meet these demands efficiently. You may experience slower app performance, crashes, or even run into difficulties with saving your work due to insufficient storage space.

Screen Size

Photo: Playing with blend modes in Procreate Dreams - ©Art Side of Life

When deciding about the size of your iPad for Procreate Dreams, I’d say the bigger screen size is better.

In my post about the best iPad for Procreate, I recommended that you should get an iPad that is similar in size to the sketchbook you like to use the most.

In the case of Procreate Dreams, though, I think it’s better when you get at least a 10″ screen, so iPad 10, iPad Air or iPad Pro 11, and iPad Pro 12.9. Animating is different than illustrating, and you may need to work with a lot of tracks and having a bigger screen will allow you to see more of them in one view.

Battery

Photo: Gallery in Procreate Dreams - ©Art Side of Life

When I used Procreate Dreams I was surprised with how much it drains the battery and that it actually crashes when below 20% battery level.

Not sure if this is a bug that the Procreate guys need to fix or if this is by design, but Procreate Dreams drained my battery within 2 hours. Not much for an animation session on the go, is it?

I believe that most people will use it at home and close to the power outlet, so this shouldn’t be an issue, but still, not something I am used to with Procreate.
