With the recent increase in remote work and working from home, I have been planning to write a buyer’s guide aimed at helping you put together the best workstation for your home office. And, to be fair, artists have always been “work from home” kind of people, so it seemed about time to have a good guide for the best desks for artists, the best chairs for artists, and the best desk lamps for artists.

Well, my nice and concise buyer’s guide has turned into three rather lengthy and in-depth articles, which I lovingly refer to as my “studio productivity suite” — though nothing to do with Microsoft! This is the first in the series — Finding the Best Art Desk: A 2021 Buyer’s Guide for Desks and Drawing Tables for Artists — and I would love for you to also check out the second and third articles:
- Finding the Best Artist Chair: A 2021 Buyer’s Guide for the Best Chairs and Stools for Artists
- Finding the Best Art Lamp: A 2021 Buyer’s Guide for the Best Lamps and Work Lights for Artists
But back to this article, where we offer advice and recommendations all aimed at making sure you can find the very best art desk, or very best drafting/drawing table, on the market today.
What to Look For in the Best Art Desks and Drawing Tables
We’re looking at a couple of different types of desks here, normal computer or studio desks for digital artists (or any artist really) and standard adjustable drawing / drafting tables, but in either case perhaps the most important thing is solid, high quality construction – to make sure the desk will be stable when we’re working on it and will last a long time.
Other factors may depend on you and your own preferences – especially when it comes to style and appearance. In this list of best desks for artists I will recommend both traditional wooden or wood-finished desks and drawing tables and more modern designs, but in either case desks and drawing tables with really premium fit and finish.
I personally like a computer desk that is plain, simple and highly useful, with as much workspace as possible and with very little else. Again, stability, high quality construction and durability are the most important factors, as I really just want a desk I can work on, falling into the creative flow without any wobbles, worries or distractions.
With drawing desks it is also very simple – stable, stable and stable. I want a drawing table that adjusts super easily, stays put when I have it at the right angle, and is completely solid and unmoving when I’m working. Other than that, a light, neutral and undistracting color, a perfectly smooth and hard work surface that won’t chip, scratch or degrade and, again, quality construction that will ensure the table will last.
How Can You Find the Right Art Desk for You and Your Needs?
Well, you could do it the same way I did. Since, unlike pencils or graphics tablets, I can’t really try out every single desk and drawing table, in my own space and for an extended period of time, I had to research this buyer’s guide for best desks for artists a little differently.
So, in addition to the few desks I personally know and have used, I read tons and tons of reviews, from Amazon and from other retail sites, and looked especially for people who had owned and used their desk or drawing table for a while — as long as possible, really. I watched out for a few basic factors:
- Solid and Stable Design
- Excellent Material and Build Quality
- Usability and How People Felt Using Them
- Overall Value
- How Happy and Satisfied They Were with Their Purchase
But you don’t have to do all that — and believe me, it took a long, long time! I have compiled a list of the best artist’s desks and the best drawing tables on the market today, based on that research, on feedback from other artists, friends and students, and on my understanding of the qualities and features any working commercial or fine artist, art student or even beginner would want or need.
I’ll break this buyer’s guide for the best desks for artists into just three sections, and so you can just go to your section and find the recommendation at your price level, and I’m really confident that you will be getting the best art desk for your needs and budget.
The three sections, and my top picks for each, are:

The Best Desks and Drawing Tables for Artists and Crafters
Best Drawing Tables for Artists in 2021
Old-school tiltable drafting tables selected for their useful designs, stability and overall quality.
Best Portable Drawing Table
A small but super-stable adjustable portable drawing table with pencil stay on the bottom, this little Saiji is perfect for working in bed, moving about the house or setting on your existing desk or work surface.
It has adjustable height and adjustable work angle, a nice tiny side drawer, a cool detachable easel thing for holding up artwork or other paper, and a nice, big work area.
The Saiji adjustable portable desk is billed on Amazon as a laptop computer desk, and it would work great for that too, but to me it is the perfect little portable drawing desk for artists, and would be incredibly useful in so many ways.
Best Budget Drawing Table
If you like a simple traditional or retro look, and want a great basic drawing table, the Meeden solid wood artist table is a great value for the money, and a solid, highly usable desk.
The Meeden drafting table has fully adjustable work angle and height, and so it would work well in lots of different situations, as a great sitting or standing desk for artists, or for anybody who wants both. The work surface is big – about two by three feet – very well finished and durable, and the table itself is extremely stable and well made.
Not much here – just a well designed, solid and high quality work table for drawing, drafting, painting or crafting, simple and very usable. Oh, and it comes with a t-square! Even without, though, the Meeden is a great value and a great basic art desk.
Best Drawing Table with Storage
Adjustable Glass Drafting Table Drawing Desk Diamond Art Desk Versatile Art Craft Station Study Table w/ 2 Slide Rolling Wheels and Drawers + Storage for Artist Painters Home Office
The Yaheetech glass drawing table has become one of the most popular desks on Amazon, and customers praise it for its extremely high quality, especially for such a low price, and for its stability and usability for drawing, painting and crafting.
The design itself is perfect. There are slots on the side for keeping and organizing a few important art supplies, two drawers for keeping other supplies and equipment, fully adjustable working angle up to 60 degrees, and a big clear working area – nearly two by three feet.
It’s hard to believe that this beautiful modern drawing table is less than one hundred dollars, and for the stability, durability, usability and premium look and feel it offers the Yaheetech adjustable drawing table is not just an easy recommendation, it seems like a bit of a steal.
Best Sit-to-Stand Drawing Table
This may be my favorite of all the recommendations in my 2021 buyer’s guide for best desks and drawing tables for artists, with a design that makes it stand out as incredibly usable in a field where all drawing tables kind of seem the same..
The Flexispot height adjustable drafting table has electric height adjustment to get the perfect height (from 28.7 to 48.4 inches) for working either sitting or standing, and the drawing surface’s angle can be adjusted from flat to 40 degrees incline. While the tiltable drawing area is not as large as with other drawing tables it is actually a really good size, and there is a lot more surface area behind and on the side, which allows more working space and keeps you from trying to set art supplies, gadgets and — worse of all — drinks on the tilted surface. There’s also a fold-up side section which gives another almost 1 by 2 feet of working area – a great design overall!
The Flexispot electric adjustable drafting table is a premium product, as evidenced by its smooth operation and its stability as much as by its fine fit and finish, but it is still remarkably affordable — a perfect art table for painting, drawing, crafting or any other work and my choice for the best sit-to-stand art table on the market today.
Best Drawing Table Overall
Professional art and drawing tables can cost well over a thousand dollars, and yet I can’t imagine anybody needing a better art table than this superb Klopfenstein AA300.
Rock solid and built for years and years of use, the Klopfenstein is ultra-simple and focused on one thing – to provide the best and most usable work surface for drafting, drawing, painting or crafting. Height is adjustable from sitting to standing positions, the big 2.5 by 3 foot surface is fully and precisely adjustable from flat to a full 180 degrees, and it’s covered with super durable Melamine.
Not the fanciest, and not the prettiest, but by far the best drafting table I’ve ever used, and an easy and strong recommendation for any working commercial or fine artist, illustrator, animator or serious crafter.
Best Studio / Computer Art Desk for Artists
Meant for general studio or computer use, but with special features and designs ideal for any artist
Best Budget Art Desk for Artists
Yeah, there are lots and lots of less expensive desks out there, some really, really cheap, but I haven’t found a single one I could wholeheartedly recommend, as they tend to be extremely cheap in materials as well, unstable, weak and poorly designed. No matter how much you save, having a desk which doesn’t stay stable when you’re working, or one you have to replace soon after you buy it, just doesn’t make sense.
But if you go up just a skosh in price you can find a brilliant ultra-basic Bon Augure (French, I believe, for auspicious, or good omen) computer desk, which is a great height, a great size, and very, very stable. With plenty of space for a computer or laptop, keyboard, mouse, tablet and even lots of physical media like paper, pens and tools, the Bon Augure excels in offering a wide-open, smooth and durable work surface, and a desk that will last for years.
Absolutely no frills, somehow this basic desk seems to encourage and increase productivity, and is highly recommended by pretty much anybody and everybody who uses it.
Best L-Shaped Art Desk for Artists
An inexpensive but high quality desk, the CubiCubi is an L-shaped design for a corner, with one side devoted to computer and the included monitor stand, and the other longer side offering tons of flat and open work space – perfect for a working artist who works with physical media, books and material alongside their digital art projects.
Available in five different finishes, the CubiCubi is a great value, solid, durable and nicely designed, and is an amazing value — an easy choice even over lots of art desks which are a lot more expensive. Plus, it has a really cool name!
Best Art Desk with Storage for Artists
Another great recommendation from the wonderful TribeSigns (see also my choice for best hybrid desk for artists, below), this time a large, basic desk with tons of storage for media, art supplies, books, pictures of your cats, whatever you’ve got.
Very solidly built, the TribeSigns Industrial is available in three finishes — white, black and wood finish — and has a wide under-desk storage shelf as well as an integrated 4 level bookshelf on the side. It also has plenty of space for both your computer and physical media work, and is stable enough to work on with confidence.
The perfect computer desk for any artist who wants to have art supplies or other stuff close at hand, and highly recommended by me and tons of happy customers all over the web.
Best Standing Desk for Artists
Another very basic and super sturdy (in this case, in fact, super-super sturdy) computer desk for artists, the Stand Up Desk Store height adjustable work desk doesn’t even have anything as fancy as an electric height adjustment, and it won’t charge your phone or talk to Alexa. “Siri, please push back my deadline. Siri? Hello?”
What it does have, though, is a very hard, smooth and predictable five foot wide work surface, an exceptionally strong build and high quality materials and construction, and the most stable height adjustability (from 33 to 47 inches) I’ve come across — ok, there may be some industrial work desks that cost maybe ten times as much which are even more precise and stable, but this beauty is in the same league.
For the serious working artist who likes to move around and work in different positions and different ways, or anybody who wants the most durable and solid workstation available for a relatively affordable price, the Stand Up Desk Store two tier desk is as good as it gets.
Best Art Desk for Artists Overall
I know, I know — a gaming desk for my top recommendation? Traitorous? Anti-Climatic? Or, the perfect choice. See, the Respawn does something that it isn’t even exactly designed to do better than pretty much any other desk on the market, and that is to provide tons of incredibly stable work space for both computer and traditional media in an efficient L-shaped design that takes up surprisingly little floor space.
Not just that, but the Respawn is incredibly strong and stable. I mean really strong and stable, to the point that I have to wonder what those gamers are getting up to… And it has a coffee cup holder and a headphone holder — perhaps not as important to others as to me. What it does not have are a bunch of garish colors, flashing LED lights, subwoofers, integral game cartridge holders or other distracting and less-than-useful add-ons.
If you are somehow resistant to the idea that a gaming desk can be a perfect choice for an artist, let me assure you that this Respawn 2000 is the real deal — strong, stable and incredibly usable, with superb material and construction quality and — believe it or not — a very understated, undistracting appearance. A not so serious desk for serious artists at every level, and the perfect choice for the best art desk overall in 2021.
Best Hybrid Computer Desk / Drawing Table for Artists
The perfect hybrid, with one side devoted to a tiltable drawing surface and the other designed for computer use
There are lots and lots of corner desks meant for artists, on Amazon and all around the web, and they range from pretty good quality to, well, not… But I am going to recommend only one, from a really wonderful company, TribeSigns, which I know both from personal experience and tons of customer testimonials to be excellent — not to mention amazingly inexpensive given its quality and utility.
A great basic design which provides a raised monitor stand on the computer side and a very stable adjustable drawing surface on the other, this TribeSigns hybrid is available in modern white and two different wood finishes. Large enough for comfortable and productive work on either side, and yet small enough, and configurable enough, to fit into any space.
An excellent product at a remarkably low price, this TribeSigns hybrid desk gets my very strong recommendation as the best hybrid computer desk / drawing table on the market today.
Final Thoughts: Ergonomics and Posture
How to Make Your Work Sessions More Healthy, Happy and Productive?
Now that you’ve chosen the very best computer desk or the very best drawing table for you, there is something you might well want to consider to make your work more comfortable and productive, not to mention more healthful.
Having a good ergonomic workstation is extremely important, as it can help you maintain the correct posture when you are working, keep your body more relaxed and your mind more focused, help you maintain energy during longer work sessions, reduce pain and tension and even help prevent repetitive motion and repetitive stress injuries like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and many more.
Here are a few suggestions for both setting up your desk and for healthy work habits:
- Keep your arms parallel to the ground when typing or using the mouse — make sure that if your keyboard is on the desktop it is not making you reach up at an angle. This can be when a good, solid keyboard tray, like my favorite Vivo Large Keyboard Tray, is crucial.
- Keep your feet raised during long sessions, or at least alternate between having them on the floor and raised — and especially if you have pain or problems with your lower back. I love the Safco Products Task Master Adjustable Footrest , 9 Position if you are sitting, and if you like to stand while at your drawing table you might want to consider the Topo Comfort Mat by Ergodriven.
- Keep your head at the level of the computer monitor — if you continuously need to look down or bend over — even a slight angle — this can bring big tension in your spine, neck and shoulders, sap your energy, cause headaches and really fog your focus. One easy solution is an adjustable-height monitor stand, like the nice and affordable BoYata Adjustable Metal Monitor Stand which is easily adjustable and very stable.
- Take breaks and stretch — getting up occasionally to move, stretch, breathe deeply and drink water can be of enormous benefit to your energy, physical relaxation, focus, productivity and emotional state.
