Budget A3 Art Printers

When you’re just starting out selling prints or want an affordable option for making copies of your work, budget A3 printers can be a great choice.

Here are some of my top recommendations in this category:

#1 Budget A3 Art Printer 1: Epson Expression XP-970

Epson Value Pick
Epson Expression XP-970 Inkjet Color Photo Printer with Scanner

Epson Value Pick for Art Prints, Stickers, Vinyl, Cricut, and Transfer paper

6-color dye-based ink system :: 5770×1440 DPI :: Borderless prints up to 11″×17″ (A3+) :: Scanner 1200x4800 DPI :: Supports vinyl stickers :: Late 2019 model :: Wireless & AirPrint

The Expression XP-970 is one of Epson’s budget Artisan inkjet printers.

It prints up to 13″ x 19″ and has a scanner so you can scan original artwork to print. The XP-970 uses 6 Claria ink cartridges for vivid color photos and graphics. One of the nice features is its ability to print directly onto cardstock.

This is an excellent entry-level choice for artists on a budget.

It delivers surprisingly good image quality for the price. I was impressed by how accurately it reproduced the colors in my landscape photos and acrylic paintings. The ink is also quite fade-resistant.

While it lacks some higher-end features, it’s a great starter A3 art printer.

#2 Budget A3 Art Printer 2: Epson Expression XP-15000

Budget Pick
Epson Expression XP-15000 13″ Inkjet Color Printer

Budget Pick for Art Prints, Cardstock, Canvas, Stickers, Vinyl, and Transfer paper

A step up from the XP-970, the Expression XP-15000 has a larger maximum print size of 13”x 44”.

It uses Epson’s 6 Claria Premium ink cartridges for wider color gamut and blacks that are nearly 2.5x denser. The ink set includes a black cartridge for outstanding black-and-white prints.

It has built-in duplex printing to save paper and an auto sheet feeder for stacks of media.

The front paper feed slot accommodates fine art paper up to 1.3mm thick. This versatility allows you to use textured fine art papers to create original prints that match the look of an oil or acrylic painting on canvas.

Image quality is excellent with vibrant, accurately saturated colors.

It’s a great option for selling large prints at art fairs or online.

#3 Budget A3 Art Printer: Canon Pixma iX6820/6850

Canon’s Pixma iX6820 (iX6850 in Europe) is a high-performance inkjet with a 13”x19” max print size.

It has 5 individual inks, including gray and photo gray. This allows it to produce crisp, deep blacks in photos and precision detailing in graphic prints.

The printer has built-in Ethernet connectivity and Pictbridge so you can print directly from a camera. It also supports Canon’s printable magnetic sticker media, allowing you to create personalized magnets of your work.

Print quality exceeds what you’d expect for the price. It renders fine gradients without banding. Photos are vibrant and detailed with excellent tonal range.

For selling large prints on a budget, the iX6820 delivers professional quality at a very reasonable price point.

#4 Value A3 Art Printer: Canon Pixma IP8720/8750

Another excellent Canon A3 art printer choice is the Pixma IP8720 (IP8750 in Europe).

It prints up to 13”x19” on fine art papers up to 1.2mm thick. The 6 ink system provides a wide color gamut and includes gray inks for detailed monochromatic prints.

The printer has built-in Ethernet and WiFi connectivity. Dual paper paths allow you to load photo paper and matte fine art paper simultaneously. It also has a rear feed that accommodates thick fine art stock.

Print quality is simply amazing for the price.

It produces gallery-quality photographic and graphic prints. Colors are vivid and lifelike. Tonal gradations are smooth and artifacts are minimal.

For artists on a budget, it’s one of the best values around.

Mid-Range A3 Printer for Art Prints

Once you start selling more prints or want to bump up print quality, these value A3 art printers offer excellent performance without breaking the bank:

My Pick

In my experience, the Canon Pixma PRO-200 is the most popular A3 printer for photographers.

It replaced the PRO-100 as Canon’s reasonably priced 13” printer aimed at professionals.

It has 8 dye-based inks for wide gamut, including gray inks for detailed black-and-white prints. The ink system is also ChromaLife 100+ for impressive longevity. It prints borderless up to 13”x39” on fine art papers up to 1.3mm thick.

The printer has built-in Ethernet for sharing in a studio and supports Canon’s Print Studio Pro plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom.

Print quality is simply stunning for the price. Images have excellent detail, dynamic range, and color accuracy.

For artists selling prints, the PRO-200 delivers near professional-lab quality for much less.

Ink Tank Printers for A3 Art Prints

Ink tank A3 printers like Epson’s EcoTank series offer ultra low operating costs by using high-capacity ink reservoirs instead of cartridges. Here’s one excellent ink tank choice:

#6 Ink Tank A3 Art Printer: Epson EcoTank ET-8550

Eco Pick
Epson EcoTank ET-8550 13″ Inkjet Color Printer

Eco All-in-one Pick for Art Prints, Cardstock, Canvas, Stickers, Vinyl, and Transfer paper

Epson’s EcoTank ET-8550 has breakthrough ink capacity – enough to print thousands of photos before needing a refill.

It uses 5 ink tanks that you fill from bottles rather than replace cartridges. This brings the cost per print down to pennies.

Despite the low cost, the ET-8550 prints up to 13”x19” with excellent quality. It uses Epson’s Claria ET Premium inks for wide gamut color. The ink is also extremely fade and water resistant.

Paper handling capabilities are similar to more expensive models. It has auto loading, a rear feed, and prints on fine art stock up to 1.3mm thick. You get excellent print quality at minuscule operating costs.

For cost-conscious artists, it’s a fantastic A3 art printer option.

Giclée A3 Art Printers

For artists who want to sell high-value fine art prints, giclée printers use archival pigment inks and advanced media handling.

They allow you to create durable, gallery-quality reproductions. Here are two excellent giclée choices:

#7 Giclée A3 Art Printer 1: Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300

Compact
Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 13″ Inkjet Color Printer

It has 10 ink tanks using Canon’s LUCIA PRO pigment inks. This includes gray inks for detailed monochromatic prints with a smoother tonality. The ChromaLife 100+ ink is scratch, smear, fade, and water resistant.

The printer feeds fine art papers up to 1.3mm thick from the auto sheet feeder or straight through the back. It supports Canon’s Print Studio Pro plugin for managing ICC color profiles.

For artists selling expensive, high-end prints, the SureColor P700 delivers exceptional quality and color.

Wide Format Art Printers (24″)

For artists printing very large-scale fine art reproductions, wide-format printers in 24″ widths and above are often needed.

These professional-grade printers are capable of printing gallery wraps, murals, and oversized artwork on thick fine art papers.

#9 Wide Format Art Printer: Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-2100

One of the best 24” art printers I’ve used for large format fine art prints is the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-2100.

This is Canon’s 24” pigment inkjet printer. It replaced the popular PRO-2000 as a lower-cost alternative to their flagship PRO-4000.

The PRO-2100 has an 11-ink LUCIA PRO pigment ink system with gray inks for detailed monochromatic prints. The inkset produces a wide color gamut and scratch resistant prints. It supports a variety of fine art papers up to 1.5mm thick via the auto sheet feeder or straight through rear manual feed.
